Yes, I completely agree. The ol’ frog in the pan of slow boiling water analogy fleshed out chronologically.
I find it so frustrating to want to watch a well written and produced show such as “The Good Wife” without the unbelievably graphic sex scenes. They are not necessary. You can simply give the impression and we get it. (And this is tv and not cable where *anything *goes…at least tv standards keep it from using the f word every other sentence.)
Do people feel ripped off if they don’t get aroused and brought closer to the edge of what’s unacceptable at some point during a show?
When will we have finally reached saturation? 24 hour kiddie porn with animals! Then will we have finally seen it all?
I guess we are all called to heroic virtue in our entertainment choices and will be consoled with endlessly fulfilling entertainment in heaven, God willing.

The Body of Christ was poisoned in the West, very gradually. Every year, every decade, starting in the late 1960s for movies and the 1970s for TV. I was there for all of it. I’d say the '70’s weren’t that bad (boy, was I wrong, but I couldn’t see it would get worse), by the mid-1980’s, about 50/50 (the movies were always worse). By the 1990s, into the abyss. And they are still coming up with more and more filth and garbage. There’s a show I like where the sexual situations aren’t there but they are upping the profanity level - shame on them. Bye bye.

There are a number of valid points, but some of this “analysis” is too facile and neat. “The Graduate” is set in the late 60’s, not the 1950’s. And I don’t see a necessary straight line between World War II and Korean War soldiers wanting to settle down with the proverbial neat yard and white picket fence, and the materialism of the 1990’s. TV programs don’t create themselves. Perhaps a better analysis would be “following the money” to better understand the forces and drivers behind the years of boundary-pushing that led from Lucy and Ricky sleeping in separate beds to the fleshpots of HBO. Who profited from all that?

I agree with you in that I don’t think soldiers wanting to come home from war and provide a nice house in a safe neighborhood for your family as greedy.
However, I was also thinking about a recent occurrence that made me realize how dull the conscience of the younger gen has become:
I remember how when I was in college in the 80’s I liked the movie “The Name of the Rose” and told my Mom. She then watched with my Dad and another couple who were also devout Catholics. My Mom called me so upset that I didn’t tell her about the graphic sex scene in the movie! I had become so accustomed that I had tuned it out.
A similar case happened about a month ago when a college student who is a good Catholic and knows that I am devout told me how much she enjoys “Orange is the New Black”. So I tried it one night and was so taken aback by topless women making out in the opening scene!
The amazing thing is that my friends and I didn’t even know what homosexuality was until we were around 17 or 18 during the 80’s. Now pre-schoolers are faced with it.

Vulgarity is running rampant, and it’s totally out of control. I don’t understand the so-called “women’s” magazines lately either. “Shape” and “Cosmopolitan” being the worst. “SEX” all over everything. I don’t understand. How can there be that many “ways” of intimacy, and how can it get any “hotter”? Well, sex will be plenty “hot” in hell.

a few years ago I went on second shift. Then I gave up the DVR with the cable because it was so expensive. Well, I stopped watching TV. I recently went back on days and well, there is nothing to watch on TV. None of the shows are interesting and they are all full of graphic sex, either visual or spoken.
So I now have more time to read and pray. I don’t miss it but I will say that once you have been away from the junk, it sure looks ‘in your fact’ if you watch it again.
At least Carol Burnett show could make you laugh without a laugh track.

I generally agree, but I strongly disagree with the author’s statement that the Boomers rejected the false promises of consumerism. I think that he learned that propaganda while watching too much television.

There are about 2 or 3 shows on tv that are safe to watch anymore. Even the safer shows are sending the message that a mean response is ok as long as someone laughs.

Don’t forget about EWTN Catholic Cable Network. They will be showing the Pope in USA next week. I watch the “OLD” movie network also . But they even get a movie on now and then that i don’t care for. I have my TV OFF lots too. God Bless, Memaw.

Money is not the driving force. The driving force was the “Sexual - without love - Revolution” where those who lived a certain way wanted to change the world to their image and likeness. That’s all. Money? That doesn’t explain anything. Why are actors willing to portray evil as if it meant nothing? As if guilt, shame and that ugly - to some - word, sin, mean nothing? So we could, as much as possible, be like them. To like what they like. To not make them uncomfortable by getting rid of morality in the minds and actions of people who believe in right and wrong. That’s the truth. I could have a billion dollars and use it for good, moral purposes, but others do not want to. So they give us filth and call it entertainment, and the more we accept, the less uncomfortable they are.
The full phrase is “push the envelope on what people [who are not like them] find acceptable.” Which people? Christians. Flawed but morally upright people. And let’s not go from I Love Lucy to Modern Family overnight. Let’s poison them - that’s us, folks - very slowly. Lie about “artistic freedom.” Oh yeah, just get us to a point to where seeing an unmarried couple who are having sex, and are in bed together, talking, is “NO BIG DEAL.”
No values. No rules. But lots and lots and lots of sex, plus profanity. That’s where all the “art” nonsense has ended up. A lie. A smoke screen. “Give us our ‘creative freedom.’” Yeah? And what are we getting? Fornication, adultery, prostitution and soft porn? And profanity. Money? A lie. A smoke screen.
Why are some of these actors involved in exposing their bodies for sexual purposes? Why is profanity becoming so common on TV and film? Money?

Oh, yes, I agree, this has been done slowly, over a period of years, all so no one even notices, just imagine what it will be like in 20yrs, Im still surprised they do not allow full nudity and the F word on regular network tv, at least on after hours, kind of strange they are still holding to these restrictions when everything else is OK…whats holding them back?

I don’t think it was “done” so slowly. Once it started, it spread like wildfire !! Abortion was legalized in 1973 and look what their doing now. They do allow full nudity on “Naked and Afraid.” I can’t even imagine (And I don’t want to either) what they allow on the porn sites!!! Most of our young don’t even bother to get married anymore and those that are fighting to get “married” are doing it for all the wrong reasons, (SSA.) And we let them get by with it! The question is, "What are we going to do about it NOW. How are we going to bring them back to God and decency.??? We need to get down on our knees and beg God’s Mercy for all. Make Holy Hours. IF you have adoration in your Parish, sign up for an hour a week. Flood our Churches with prayerful people. Go to Daily Mass if at all possible. Seek the TRUTH. Learn the truths about your Catholic Faith. Don’t be a cafeteria Catholic. Pray the Rosary every day. We seem to have plenty if time for TV, sports, movies etc. but how much time do we spend in prayer or Adoration of Our Lord??? God Bless, Memaw

Im not sure, I remember back when NYPD Blue was popular, they caused all kinds of debates when they showed mens butts on primetime tv…this was back in the mid-late 90s, it is now 2015 and when something similar is shown, it STILL causes debates/ uproars…?? Not to mention, strong curse words are STILL not allowed, heavy fines are imposed when they do occur. Even on late night tv, same rules STILL apply…if things were so bad now, wouldnt we be seeing them allow all kinds of words, scenes?

There’s plenty of evidence that a process called ‘conditioning’ occurred, just as is done in military Psychological Warfare. How it was done is well-documented.
Pope Francis has been telling us very clearly about what to do, but the conditioning process is very far along. It is slowing, somewhat, but the public, and Catholics, need to do their own research. At this stage, our responses to certain things have become automatic - we don’t even realize it. It did take years. That occurred so we - as Catholics - went through the following process so that now, at least two generations of Catholics think certain things are NO BIG DEAL. Here it is:
- Agitators who claimed to be giving us freedom, gave us lies instead.
- Because, especially in the past, we trusted strangers too much, too many of us decided to give their way a try.
- We were introduced to cohabitation, immoral sexual practices, illegal drugs and porn and it was all COOL. “Try it, man. It’ll expand your mind (what?).” So, we tried this and that. Our brains clouded by drugs and our new “friends” constantly preaching immoral lifestyles to us, along with other things.
We protested and protested, but the media, who we also trusted, began to argue against us. “Head Shops” opened - Head being short for Dope Head, in places all over the country. The one in my neighborhood enabled and encouraged us to hate the rich, and sold “underground newspapers” to ‘help’ with that. They sold dirty, filthy ‘underground comix’ where the “heroes” were illegal dope dealers who took drugs, and had sex with whoever and loved porn. We were told to hate corporations by the ‘newspapers.’ One had a poster titled, “Eat the Rich.” One published instructions about how to cheat corporations out of some money.
Movies started to get worse, followed by TV.
Then abortion. It was sold like a product, with lies.
So, what to do? According to Pope Francis:
Have that “internal conversion.” You - now.
Learn what “family” actually means. Really means.
Learn why controlling our sexual desires is very important.
Learn that men and women are complementary and why. And why any confusion exists, and how relationships and the self-image of women have been greatly distorted.
