I have pictures of relatives and was told it was at their solemn communion. Pictures are from early 1900’s in Wisconsin.

In the UGCC, we have the practice of the solemn Communion. Basically kids are given Communion from the time they were baptized, even as an infant. The solemn Communion are for those who have reached the age of reason, meaning they have not the appreciation of the Eucharist which they didn’t have when they were younger.

in some places and some cultures, French Canadian for instance, like some of our relatives, the custom was first communion in early childhood, then solemn communion at the end of formal schooling along with Confirmation, and that was the big celebration. sometimes when infants were confirmed, the formal or solemn communion was the “rite of passage” in adolescence for Catholic youth.
