but i think a lot of non-Catholics just come here to the forums to waste our time - acting like they want answers when they really don’t, when all they want to do is go on and on and on… asking the same question but in different words (etc). I’ve seen it happen so many times… they never seem to want to accept ANY answer that is given… and then, at some point, they just drop out suddenly, saying things like “I’m done”…

Do you get the feeling they are just trying to aggravate us or somehting? Or what???

Why do they do this?? Seriously… i don’t get it… (Which reminds me of a Thread that inspired this one… called something like: “I still don’t get it”).

i mean, if they hate Catholicism that much… why do they waste their time and our’s as well…?

Maybe it’s a source of hapiness? :whacky: I dunno…
Yikes…

proves all the more how needed Catholicism is…

I mean, if a person gets happiness from that kind of thing… obviously some healing is needed… I get mine from he Church… 🙂

Maybe they aren’t satisfied with the answers they get? 🤷

However, I think some of the non-Catholics don’t come here for dialogue. I get the impression that some come to gain converts to their religion.

Others just refuse to accept the truth and will continue arguing no matter how much evidence, logic, or proof you provide. Some people are just like that.

i don’t buy that with (at least) the posters i have in mind… because most normal (key word) people would at least acknowldge… that there is truth in some of what is said… Some posters act like… “well, Ok, i see your point… but i really dont see your point…” or whatever…

I could understand THAT reason… but the one who started I Still Don’t Get it… doesn’t seem to be in that category… and others also…

well, yeah… but you didn’t answer the question…

WHY???

Why do you think some people are like that??

I would suggest that we don’t paint non-Catholics with the same broad brush. People come for different reasons. I initially came because I was interested learning about Catholicism. I also came for dialogue. I also came because it was a “happening” place. I also came because I found some intelligent Christian ideas from the Catholics which I didn’t ever get from fundamentalists.

Sure, some visit to antagonize. Some visit to convert Catholics. Some visit to annoy. But, I think you have to take one poster at a time and deal with their reasons instead of lumping everyone together. I’m very open-minded about my faith. And I would bet I’m not alone.

Peace…

Well I came here. I am a non-Catholic, but looking for guidance. I WILL take what you tell me seriously. On the other hand, after reading through a lot of post I understand where you are coming from, I think a good number of non-Catholics do come here just to waste your time. Sorry

I recently did a poll about this…
12% said they wanted to debate with Catholics
5% said they wanted to annoy Catholics
0% said they wanted to convert Catholics

Riiight.

Well it is good to know that I count for zero percent. 🤷

I think some do come to convert Catholics as they should. It should be the goal of any Christian to try and lead one to the total truth of Christ. Evangelization is very important. (They just don’t know that they have the partial truth.)

I also believe the Holy Spirit is guiding them here to hear the truth. Some will listen some will not. Christ didn’t even bat a 100 percent.

(Plus the obstinate ones let me practice my evangelization for when I meet people in person.)

How do you get into a swimming pool?

Do you dive right in, regardless of water temperature?

Or do you put one toe in the water, withdraw and shake off the toe and tell everyone in the pool that they’re crazy to be out in that cold water? And then you put your whole foot in the water, withdraw it and shiver for a minute, then immerse yourself down to your knees, then climb out and shiver even more, then immerse yourself to your waist, stand shivering, consider climbing out again and forgetting the whole thing, and then finally, you plug your nose and duck under the water.

Catholicism is the pool. There are a few people who plunge right in. Perhaps God convicts them and right away, they say, “Yes, I will become Catholic,” and they do it without any messing around or toe-warming or shivering. One good dive and they’re in.

But most people take their time. They put a “toe” in–perhaps by signing onto CAF and asking a question or two. But the answer “freezes” them, and they pull that toe out and say, “No way, you people are crazy, I’m going back to the clubhouse where it’s warm and dry.”

But a little while later, they come back, maybe with a different user name, and this time, they put their whole foot in! They’re mad and scared and determined to prove that Catholicism is wrong. And then they get cold and scared again and pull that foot back out and stomp back to the clubhouse!

And a little while later, they’re back. More questions, more debates, more outbursts–this time, they’re in up to their knees or waists and they have to flounder a bit to climb out. Golly, that water’s cold and wet! They really don’t want to take a swim in the pool after all. So they leave again.

Sadly, some don’t come back to the pool at this point.

But others come back and take the plunge.

What those of us who are already in the pool need to remember is that we should encourage those who are sitting on the side of the pool checking out the water by sticking their toes in. I personally don’t think we should splash them or tease them or call them names. I think we should continue to call out to them and tell them how much fun it is to be in the pool, and eventually, hopefully, they will decide to join us.

If they are trying to waste your time, then they are wasting theirs in the process. I have seen many Catholics ask the same questions to Protestants and people of other religions repeatedly too - that does not mean they are trying to waste n-c’s time. There’s several reasons for doing this: new people come and ask questions that have been asked many times before. Old people may not have agreed with the answers they got last time, or, maybe the answers they got last time did not really give them a complete answer, and they are hoping that by rewording the question, they will get a slightly more directed answer. For example, I had a post not too long ago which centered on one line of a quote, and had a back-up paragraph as to why I was asking the question. Many subsequent posters focused on the back-up paragraph instead of the question that I had really wanted focused on.

I find more and more as I age, that things I think I say crystal clear, the other person is stumped on what I mean. Sometimes it just takes another person rewording something in a way that clicks. That’s the joy of dialogue over the internet instead of dialogue in person, where you can hear tone, emphasis on certain words, see facial expression, hand movements, etc, and be able to clarify meaning much clearer and quicker.

I know its hard for both sides to dialogue with people that hold very contradicting views, but please give people the benefit of the doubt. If you are tired and understandably don’t want to answer a question for the thousandth time, just ignore the thread and move on.

Why do you come to the conclusion its about hate? People feel very strongly about their religion, just as you do yours. It does not mean there is hate involved. Pretty much everyone thinks they follow the true (“best”) spiritual path.

you did nnot give me what i wanted… I wanted to know:

If i AM wrong… How am i wrong…??? I mean: is there another reason (than given) for people doing this??

I get the feeling you don’t have an answer to WHY either… (?)

Catholicism is the pool.
I like the analogy, but a few questions…
  • I assume “cradle Catholics” are those that had new age underwater births?
  • Catholicism makes your fingers wrinkly?
  • Who are those who pee in the pool?
  • Is it a good idea to go off the deep end?
On a side note, would it help any to go to a public pool, have it blessed as holy water, and yell the baptismal formula every time someone jumps in for a swim? 😃

You might be right for some of the time. However, there are some genuine souls out there wanting to know more and what better place to come than here? We have to be patient, so we need to pray for more patience when this happens.

  • I guess.
  • That would be wierd.
  • Cafeteria Catholics?
  • If you can swim.
I remember my high school Theology teacher was hoping to do a demonstration of baptism using the cup of water he was drinking and an unsuspecting student. 😛

i don’t know where you get that idea… I didn’t say ALL… i said “a lot”… & One poster coming here to just argue & antagonize and distract… (etc…) is one too many, in my opinion…

I mean, a person should have a good reason for posting… Trying to antagonize just for the sake of antagonizing (were that to be the case… God knows) is not a good reason…

you’re probably right… i often, hear while praying, the word Patience…

Jesus has to remind me because i don’t have much of that… at least in some areas of my life…
