I don’t think all non-Catholics come here for less than honorable reasons… I think many of them do come here for very decent and even honorable reasons. I think that some of them realize that they really don’t know much about Catholicism, and they are curious. Some like to come here to discuss and debate. I have found several people here that are not Catholics…that I would actually like to meet in person some day…they are reasonable people that are intelligent and can carry a good conversation completely without any aggression or vitriol.

On the other hand, there are the “others”… I’m not sure I know what motivates them, but in some ways I think I do…and beyond that, I need not know more. 😃

I have learned from some of the non-Catholics here, and hopefully they have learned from us as well. 😃

Peace!!

You might be right for some of the time. However, there are some genuine souls out there wanting to know more and what better place to come than here? We have to be patient, so we need to pray for more patience when this happens.
i’m not talking about the genuine ones… i have a lot of respect for them because they are sincerley trying to find truth…

i do not respect trouble makers much however… I do need to pray for them, though… those who have nothing better to do… well, they obviously need prayers… worse than others may need them…

i don’t know where you get that idea… I didn’t say ALL… i said “a lot”… & One poster coming here to just argue & antagonize and distract… (etc…) is one too many, in my opinion…

I mean, a person should have a good reason for posting… Trying to antagonize just for the sake of antagonizing (were that to be the case… God knows) is not a good reason…

What does it matter if you said “all” or “a lot”? The point is that you are still painting a broad brush. I still think that you have to take one poster at a time. Either way you have a lot of resentment you need to let go of.

but i think a lot of non-Catholics just come here to the forums to waste our time - acting like they want answers when they really don’t, when all they want to do is go on and on and on… asking the same question but in different words (etc). I’ve seen it happen so many times… they never seem to want to accept ANY answer that is given… and then, at some point, they just drop out suddenly, saying things like “I’m done”…

Do you get the feeling they are just trying to aggravate us or somehting? Or what???

Why do they do this?? Seriously… i don’t get it… (Which reminds me of a Thread that inspired this one… called something like: “I still don’t get it”).

i mean, if they hate Catholicism that much… why do they waste their time and our’s as well…?
Attacking Catholicism is, believe it or not, the method that many Protestants use to evangelize. Many have never heard of mutual respect and they just presume we are ignorant. Sadly, this is what they are taught in their churches.

Having said that, there are also many Protestants here who are very charitable toward and knowlegable about Catholicism. God bless 'em.

**Trolls **exist everywhere on the Series of Tubes. The minute you allow participation from the Great Unwashed, either via a comments section or through a forum such as this, you are going to get people who do not care about the purpose of the site, but just want to insult/be obnoxious/be nonsensical, i.e. troll.

I’ve seen some fairly nasty, condescending, idiotic, abusive commentary left on Catholic blogs, news sites, etc. I don’t doubt that if vatican.va has a replies section, not all the comments will be to bless the Holy Father and pray for his intentions.

I don’t know if that word (troll) is prohibited at CAF as uncharitable, but as the topic of this discussion, call a spade a spade. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it before.

You’re wrong.
That’s not why I came here anyway. I came to actually learn what the RC teaches and WHY it teaches this. But I can count on ONE hand the number of answers that have made sense, and not just been circular reasoning and abuse-shouting. And when I then try to debate those answers, pointing out that it’s circular reasoning, I’m told that I’m a “catholic-hater”, etc.
That aggrevates ME - being told that I hate someone when all I do is trying to find some kind of cohesent reasoning behind the teachings of the RC church. I understand perfectly well why some choose to "drop out suddenly, saying things like “I’m done” - being harassed like non-RCs (especially Protestants and Jews) generally are on this forum will do that to ya…

Well, that’s just because we’re right. It says so right here in the catechism (holds up catechism in front of screen for all to see).

Sorry. I couldn’t resist. 😃

The only suggestion I can give is to add those people to your “ignore” list (and simultaneously to your prayer list). Or go away for a while, get your equilibrium back, then return for another rasslin’ match. I’ve done that myself.

Anyway, my definition of “troll” does not include people who come here to sincerely seek information (even if they have no intent to convert). It also does not really include those whom you mention, on either side (Catholic or non-Catholic) – such is the case of poor arguers/debaters (of which I am one: a poor debater* that is, not being sufficiently knowledgeable to be a good apologist). Frustration can lead to defensiveness which can lead to, to put it mildly, incivility. The best weapon against such is to maintain your own civility in the face of incivility, charity in the face of a lack thereof. Easier said than done, I certainly know. 😊

*You could easily win an argument with me over this or that facet of Catholicism, or the Reformation, or whatnot. Doesn’t necessarily make you right or wrong. Just means you’re a better arguer.

This has been my experience as a debater:

“Take a position for or against the existence of God. You will find God at the front of the class to take up the contrary position.” 🤷

Anyway, see you around the fora.

Hopefully you continue to look for answers. I agree that we at times can be harsh. Sometimes it becomes frustrating when we state the same things over and over with documentation and are rejected. For example the issue concerning the DCs is very clear and supported by secular research that the RCC is correct. Yet no matter how many times we publish the support people still reject them. Some of us become frustrated. You are correct we shouldn’t. I for one will try to do better.

Because some people like debate. Some people like hearing varying points of view. Some people want to post their thoughts on an online community where instead of their fellow inter-webbers patting them on the back and telling them how right they are they’ll an intelligent counter.

Is this really so hard to understand?

Probably not, seeing as the OP is asking to be told wrong. 😛

In my opinion, I will try not to look at this way that others coming here to waste our time and their time - it does not matter if they mean to do this or not.

It is more important to look at oneself why he feels his time being wasted by others. If he thinks it this way, he might realize that this forum is either not for him at the moment in time or his patience is not enough to deal with others.

If one can truly put up with his fellow Christian with love and patience, then no time is wasted.

It should come as no surprise when you start a thread entitled "tell me I’m wrong, but …and then insult an entire class of people. Look at the threads: they are composed of those who attack Roman Catholicism, but mostly they are threads started by Catholics asking non-Catholics insulting questions.

I came here because I was assured I could discuss doctrine here, in an interfaith setting. Instead all I find is argument over whose faith is correct and whose is not. Nothing interfaith about that and it solves nothing.

Then the answers are mostly worse. “They” want answers, “they want” this or that. I’m not some alien. I am a Christian, an Episcopalian, and part of a catholic church. I didn’t come here to learn about Catholicism, I was one for 30 years, I’ve been an Anglican for 20. I don’t come to convert anyone. I come to discuss mutual areas of interest and places where we can work together. Apparently that’s not really possible, because all I see is “We wrote the bible, and We are the True church.” This stuff, even if believed does zero to either enhance one’s position or to foster dialog.

Have you considered that the Catholic asking the question is doing so in a sincere manner…and has no intentions of insulting anyone?

You are assured that you can discuss just about anything here in this interfaith setting. And yes you will find arguments…if that is how you are looking at the responses, or if you are expecting them to be arguments. Yes and no. Its a little bit of a stretch that you expect to judge what it does or does not solve. Me, I’m sure that many questions have been answered and much has been learned by participants here.

OK, welcome to the backblast of the “chicken versus the egg came first story”… I would guess in one form or another its been like this for hundreds or even thousands of years. In all fairness, if a Catholic responds that the Church produced the Bible…there is truth, as even “secular” history bears that out. As to the True Church…well, lets face it…the Bible bears that out. If it wasn’t true then Mathew 16:13-19 would not read as it does. It would say something very different.

You are right though…while it does not foster dialogue…one has to consider this: What are the motives of the members of OTCC’s (Other than Catholic Church’s) motives when they come into a Catholic Forum site and make claims to the opposite and rag on Catholics with tritely inane and pedantic claims of “idolatry, statue worship, et al, ad nauseum”. Do their actions foster anything “productive”. Are Catholics supposed to roll over on their backs and do the “Dieing Cockroach”? No, hardly. We defend our faith, and explain it…and yet for years…they refuse to listen… Do they have to accept and convert? No, not unless they are inclined to do so. Accept and understand. That would be a good idea. They certainly expect others to do so where they are concerned.

Welcome to the human race…

Life is not a “one way” street.

Peace!😃

*Mind if I ask why you really came here? Seems to me that the majority of your posts are negative commentaries as opposed to seeking “ecumenical family-hood”.

i do? Hmmm… i dont feel resentful…

Well, maybe i am mildly resentful of people who just want to antagonize for no good reason… but any normal human being would be so resentful…

Probably not… 😃

(Kinda proves the point made in another thread… about how Protestants spend more time in Purgatory… Some (repeat SOME) are just SO negative and anti-Cathlic… & don’t just attack the Church but individual Catholics as well… sounds like a Purging job is in order to me…
I liked this point:

I found this next thing hilarious… 😃

and then there is this question that is never answered by the more belligerent-sounding among the Protestnat Posters…

I have a good friend who is ‘born again’ and I have often wondered why she continues to debate the same topics with me over and over again, knowing what I will say. No matter what answer I give her, she comes back with the same things I have answered time and time again and I’ve reached the point where I simply reply, ‘well, you know what I think,’ or ‘yes well we’ve discussed that many times before and I think we’ve flogged it to death’ or ‘we’ll just have to agree to differ.’

I’ve came to the conclusion, rightly or wrongly, that some people just like having deep discussions and debating. The bar room is a good place for debates and many of the world’s problems have been solved during a bar room debate, the one’s that don’t end up in a row that is. Pity they can’t be put into practice however given some of the solutions I’ve heard, perhaps it’s just as well! Perhaps my friend simply needs to satisfy the need for debate, accumulation of knowledge whether she agrees with it or not, and she has the opportunity to air her opinions which I would guess she doesn’t get to do very often, as a lot of people avoid religious debate like the plague! I think she’s also one of those people who may have a certain curiosity about Catholicism but wants to find out about it through debating with me as any other way, it may look like she’s actually interested in it.

Alternatively, some people just like to argue and some want information so they can go and research counter-arguments to what you say. Some may also see it as evangelising.
