Thank you, Eucharisted, for starting this thread which has such wonderful conversion and reversion stories. God gives to each according to need. I don’t know if any of you read Surprised by Truth 1,2, &3, but you might want to do so. Here is a link:

Other interesting titles are to be found as well.

My own story starts as a cradle Catholic. I recall singing for Sunday Mass in the Latin vernacular while in the primary grades. We’d be called to sing for funerals as well, so I’d walk the mile mostly by myself past the greasy neighborhoods of factories and taverns to the Catholic Church (one of several ethnic churches) in the heart of the city. I loved the Mass and used my missal intently checking the translation on the opposite page. I felt caught up in the rhythm and beauty of the choral pieces and chant that drew me in to the depth of the Holy Sacrifice. Eventually, I entered the convent in freshman year of high school, an old stately building in the city.

The first year was a year of blessing as we aspirants were housed with the postulants and novices and first professed sisters. We looked to these elders in faith as models hoping to be like them in holiness and virtue. But something happened along the way. Maybe it because of a misinformed interpretation of Vatican II, but during my sophomore year, my fellow aspirants and I were housed in the new Catholic high school with all the students who were not entering religion. However, even before that time, a monseigneur, during the course of a class in biblical scholarship, surprised and outraged us by telling us that what we read in the bible is myth and not necessarily truth. Maybe he explained that we shouldn’t be literalists, but at the time, we were all shocked and dismayed not knowing what to believe.

Almost the whole prep school didn’t return the following year. (We eventually had a reunion).
From this time on, my faith waned. New forms of the liturgy appeared from out of nowhere it seemed. Nothing was explained to the laity, at least in my parish. I stopped attending Mass early on in college and eventually, after a few philosophy classes, considered myself an atheist (much to my parents’ great sorrow). I became a pseudo-intellectual and attempted to destroy anyone else’s faith, as well, for which I feel intense regret–at one time, self-loathing.

I drank the cup to the last drops. If there were no true God, anything goes, I decided. The time was the 60’s, and I participated in various evils of the time. When I was tossing off the weight of religion and all its precepts and judgments, I felt an exhilaration and freedom like I had never known. However, little by little, it sunk in somewhere in my psyche that something was missing. Something important. Maybe it was an anchor. I couldn’t put my finger on it and became depressed. Nothing brought lasting relief. (This feeling I had now helps me to understand women suffering from post-abortion syndrome in my pro-life work). I even married in this nihilistic state of mind which summoned its own problems.

It wasn’t until after I had two (of six) children that something changed. My 3-year-old had begun asking me deep question like “Mommy, where will I go when I die?” “What does dying mean?”
“Will we be together?” “Always?” I couldn’t answer but to say that we will become part of the earth where we will be buried. My son would ask me the same questions in various ways over and over, until I started to burn with a desire to understand. I went to the library (my haven) where I picked up books on philosophy and theology and began reading into the night.

About this time, a friend came into my life who told me about the happenings going on at the big Catholic Church in town–how people were praising God, speaking in tongues, prophesying and witnessing. I was burning with desire to see if this was really true or some imaginative interplay that was meaningless. One evening I walked in to the church basement while, what was called a prayer meeting, was occurring. Immediately, I felt a presence in a particular area of the ceiling, which I thought was the Holy Spirit but have no evidence to name it. (I believe I experienced this because one time during my so-called existential angst, I had lost all hope and desire after a night of partying, and as I sat on the couch in my California apartment in despair, suddenly I found myself out of my body and in a corner of the ceiling. All I remember is an intense desire to be back in my body, and at that very second I was. I had put this event on a back burner of my already tortured mind).

When I heard the heavenly sounds of praise in tongues, I was astounded. Inwardly, I knew I was a filthy rag among saints, and the beginnings of sorrow and shame began to flow until I was overwhelmed with grief. I borrowed books on the Holy Spirit and read until I could return the following week. There was quite a crowd because the church was open to all Penecostals, Catholic and otherwise. Once again during the praying in tongues, because I could not join in, I asked God to receive my prayer. My hands and arms, which were outstretched, became warmer and warmer. At the same time, a sensation like, how can I describe it, but like a lovely feeling of a sip of wine and and the most wonderful feeling of love. How does love feel one might ask? The love God imbues is unlike no other. The joy of it made me want to leave this earth and be united with Him forever. However, it only lasted for, perhaps, up to a minute as the effects slowly diminished.

to be cont’d

cont’d from above:
I told my mother about this newly found faith, but she was adamant that I was going off into foreign territory telling me that it is only the Mass and Sacraments that are valid. Nonetheless, she joined me for the next meeting. I was still reading various books from Teihard de Chardin and the Dutch Catechism (both of which I found out eventually to be suspect) to the Bible and various Catholic and Protestant authors. However, it was the prayer meetings that solidified my faith. At the following meeting, during the praying in tongues, something happened simultaneously. My mother next to me suddenly felt a rush of air in the room and told me quietly thinking a window was open. No window was open. At the same time, a sudden movement of the Holy Spirit entered and exited my torso. (For those of you who are querulous about happenings that are out of the ordinary and find them to be imaginative, I often think the same when it comes to others’ experiences. At least, that’s how it was then, but now I tend to believe). Again I had the experience of wine and love permeating my whole being.

Finally, I decided I must go to Confession. So I made an appointment with the priest who directed the prayer meetings. (By the way, eventually the Penecostal crowd split over doctrinal differences). I wanted desperately to be forgiven and be a part of God’s company of saints and angels and His wonderful Church. At a meeting in the rectory, the priest heard my confession and prayed over me to receive the “baptism of the Holy Spirit.” I still didn’t understand it even after reading about it. The priest said that it caused some people to cry uncontrollably or to laugh raucously or make various movements or start praying in tongues. I hadn’t been through the official meetings that led up to the “baptism of the Holy Spirit” so I was hoping I could bypass the meetings and receive it then and there. It was assumed that the gift of tongues went with it. So that was my expectation. I had thought that if I were to actually be a beneficiary of this gift, speaking in tongues would be proof

So as it happened, the priest prayer over me, first for deliverance of evil spirits (due to my out of body experience as I had unfolded to him). When nothing happened, he figured I wasn’t prepared enough and left the room to get me some books. Suddenly, there in the room with me (a room with a very high ceiling) stood my Lord Himself, Jesus. (Please don’t misunderstand or misjudge me. I am only relating events as they occurred). How do I know it was Jesus? I knew because He let me know. That’s how we will recognize everyone in Heaven. I saw Him with the eyes of the soul; it was an intellectual vision as St. Teresa of Avila describes. He didn’t appear as a human being in the way we see other human beings or in any ghostly apparition with clouds all around, yet His feet were on the floor. He was so very tall. Almost as tall the the high ceiling-7,8,9 feet. I have no conception. Again, there was that incredible, eluctable feeling of wine and love. (I forgot to mention that each time, there was movement all around, and I felt as though in another dimension. I know it’s hard for anybody else to understand).

His presence diminished as the priest walked in, but I heard nothing he said about each book. All I could do was go home and wait for Jesus to come back. But in all the ensuing years, He has not returned in that way, but has given me signs of His presence. A week later, my family had to move, and I felt badly about leaving my church and fond memories. However, the night before we left, I prayed late into the night. Somehow, strange words came out during my prayer. I said to myself that if, the next morning, I would remember these strange words without writing anything down, then it would have to be the “gift of tongues.” Sure enough, these strange words, about a sentence long, have been with me although I have no interpretation and rarely do I make use of them. Maybe someday, the Lord will make use of them for me.

Most people would think that with the taste of Heaven, I would become a saint the very next day. I wish it would have been so. However, the cares and turmoils of earthly life have a way of distracting us from our heavenly goals. With more children and various troubles in my family life, I lost perspective of heavenly verities and started to slide into petty and no-so-petty sins. Tucked away in the recesses of my mind were many signs and small wonders of God working in my life. The lovely, overwhelming smell of roses in mid-winter as I prayed for help to Padre Pio (not yet declared a saint), the beautiful wine and love sensation while being prayed over by the hands of a priest at my new church–God made me feel welcome. (You see, at first, I wasn’t sure whether God was calling me to a Protestant denomination or Catholic).

But other “supernatural” kind of happenings were also at work to destroy the tiny glimmer of faith that was, nonetheless, growing as I read the stories of the saints and the classic spiritual books. One day my third son (about a year and a half) was jumping on my bed next to me while I was on the phone. He was gently swinging a beautiful, pink cyrstal rosary around and around. I caught him out of the corner of my eye, hung up the phone, and attempted to grab the rosary while reprimanding him. Suddenly, and incredibly the rosary, which had been intact with chain soldered, flew around the room in pieces of varying sizes. I was shocked to the extreme. Even my little boy looked surprised with a piece dangling from his tiny hand. Perhaps, the evil one was angry that we were praying the rosary nightly. Amazing as that is, for the following week, I’d find a piece or a bead far down the hallway hidden behind boxes (we had just moved). I didn’t tell anyone until some years passed when my older children didn’t want to join in the prayer, and, yes, we fell apart.

There were a few other events and signs–one such being a prophetic dream, concerning my family that is too personal to reveal. But what I want to emphasize is the Great Mercy, the DIVINE MERCY of the Lord who saved me from a great lapse that would have sent me into the deepest, darkest, coldest place in Hell were it not for His intervention. As I mentioned above, I had been sliding and actually falling into sin again, since I thought Jesus had gone back up to Heaven and forgotten me. That, of course, was a rationalization. I knew the presence of God. I saw Him. I loved Him. But, like Judas, I betrayed Him. Not long after, I fell into the darkness of the pit and lost sight of my Lord, although I thought I was living correctly on the outside, attending Mass, trying to raise my children Catholic, getting involved in church activities and the pro-life movement.

cont’d. . .

cont’d from above:
Yet, the core of me was not cleansed completely of petty sins and greater faults. God, in His Divine Mercy, sent me an illness that was almost lethal. When I was told by the doctor, though, Jesus gave me the consolation of knowing that it was from Him and in a locution whispered the word “adventure” in my “inner” ear. (I actually heard the word. It’s the only time that has ever happened to me). So I didn’t fear and have come through this test with a greater love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and, especially Jesus in His Divine Mercy.

That is my story somewhat abbreviated. God gives us hope even in times of despair. And although what He gives to one is different from another, He knows what we need. He loves us ALL with an “everlasting love.”

This is similar to my Reversion, i was born Catholic, Baptized and all. After a few years i was very uninterested in Church, I guess “G-d” just didn’t cross my mind. then it was the year of my Confirmation (My Parents were Lax in faith kinda, they just wanted me to Confirm) i stopped going to CCD for years untill the year i was supposed to be Confirmed, I skipped years of CCD, but that last year of CCD made the difference for me. I was Confirmed, and I have a new Fire driving me, Christ is the Truth.

I struggled with sins of Lust during the time i was absent, i didn’t even know why, but i recall praying (Kinda the same thing over and over again) everytime i commited said act (I didn’t even know it was mortal sin untill my confirmation year) (atleast if i recall i didn’t know, my memory is bad) but I felt something was wrong, i prayed for forgivness, but I didn’t really know what I was doing or how wrong it was, it was just naturall guilt I guess.

I used to be Anti-Christian, thinking they stomped on everyone else’s beliefs, now G-d led me to the truth that is the Christ.

Glory be to G-d for his mercy. G-d bless his church.
I forgot to add a little on my previous post sorry.

At the time i was learning to pass confirmation, when my CCD teacher read the bible and explained it to me, I felt whole, I wanted to know more, I wanted more of the Bible. I actually looked forward to go to CCD, I hungered for it.

At one time, i was going to the bathroom to wash my hands, then I did the sign of the cross, however, I mixed up the sign of the cross with something else :o, I corrected myself and said the Sign of the Cross the Right way. When i did, i heard a voice out of nowhere say “Good” (i dont know if it was “Good” i corrected myself or “Good” in another way) I looked at the bathroom window, and there was the outline of a figure standing behind. I thought it was Jesus because the outline sortah matched alot of painting of him,(Hair that reached the shoulders), i wanted to have the Courage to open the curtain, and see what the shadow was. But i got scared and Ran into the living room. I never told anyone this event before.

(when i heard the word “Good”, it felt like it came from everywhere around me, and it suprised me)

Very well said, but then one could argue that it would be better for everyone to remain invincibly ignorant to better their chances for Heaven.

Regardless, I don’t agree with it and will not join a church that endorses such a view.

Good for all of you who can.
Don’t give up, there is something in God’s word that draws you too! God wants you! Christian life IS a sacrifice. I’ll pray for you now.🙂

Like the title says!
Hi Eucharisted,

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to share my conversion experience. I am not a Catholic, but hopefully you will receive it well. Thanks for asking. Feel free to ask questions if you have any for me.

It is a bit lengthy so I will have to post in II parts. Sorry for the length

The Backstory of Mudcat…

It was 9 years ago, I was 27, when the events surrounding my coming to Christ transpired. This is not a full biography of me, but to sum up the events prior in short order. I was baptized in the church of my parents (SBC) when I was 7. In all truth, I just got wet, my commitment was disingenuous. I was active in church till age 16. I abandoned my families religion for a number or reasons. I became agnostic and was a pure hedonist for some time. Following a path of excess that involved drug and alcohol abuse, as well as being an incorrigible but successful skirt chaser.

The path I was following was very self destructive. I was a bright kid, and had academic scholarships as well as SAT/ACT scholarships. Within my first year of college I had ruined those. I eventually dropped out of school altogether and had a hard time holding down a job of any sort. My parents were pretty intolerant of my behavior and threw me out… with hard feelings on both sides. I managed to find people who would put me up in between jobs, when I couldn’t pay rent.

At age 23 I struck up a relationship with my high school sweetheart, an inactive LDS who was walking the same destructive path as myself. We moved in together and our love for each other at least saved us from the brink of total disaster. We left the hard drugs and got decent jobs in retail management. In 2 years we were married and we moved back to our hometown and “settled down” a bit. We both took jobs in outside sales. I sold office equipment. We both did not go to church and God was not a part of our relationship.

Enough of a back story. Okay, now to the conversion of Mudcat

2 years later, age 27, it was Oct. 21st of 98 ,little had changed. Both of us in our same occupations, etc… She was pressing on me very hard to have children, I was having the worst 6 months in sales in my life, and we had a lot of financial problems. I was totally stressed out.

On this particular day, at work, my delivery guy was out sick and I needed to demo 3 machines. The last machine was at a small black baptist church and was scheduled to be delivered at 6pm before their Wed. prayer meeting. I took the delivery van and 3 machines that morning and went alone. I had a lot of windshield time and did a lot of thinking about the fact that my life seemed to be falling apart.

After the first two machines were delivered, I headed out towards my last destination, it was late afternoon. I had lots of time to get there and decided to take the long way round to think a bit more. But, the more I thought, the more distressed I became. I felt so boxed in about my life and there was no obvious way out of my problems.

Anyways, so lost in thought, I wasn’t paying attention to the road. I saw a long piece of steel laying in the roadway, to late. I had a blowout, but managed to keep the van under control and pull over as best I could to the side of the road. There was a steep ditch and I could only pull off partially on the side of busy two lane road. The tire that was blown was on the highway side, unfortunately. I was also stranded several miles from the nearest town (which was a small town, that lived below poverty line and there were no cell phone towers in that area back then).

Well, I did my best to emotionally “sober up” and went to the rear to get the spare tire. I had a significant problem…the handle that held the nut that loosened the spare was broken off and nothing short of pliers or vice-grips would loosen the spare. I searched the van, but I didn’t have any. I did my best to come to grips with the fact that I would be very late and prepared myself for a cold 5 mile hike to town…It gets strange right here.

I stepped out of the van and there was an 11-13 year old black boy, sitting on a black quarter-horse across the road. (This was a strange sight…even in the deep south in 1998). He asked me if I needed help and I explained I needed pliers. He said he had some at his house and pointed to a ramshackle of a place down the road …and galloped of.

I retrieved the jack and began to jack the tire. Here was another problem. I was having to change the tire with my body in the highway. No sooner than I had started changing the tire, a State Trooper pulled up. He was a monstrous fellow…tall, muscular and black. He said he would block the lane while I finished and he pulled his car out into the lane to protect me.

No sooner than the I got the old blown out tire off, the kid shows back up on his horse and gives me the vice-grips. I get the spare and put it on…thank everyone and go.

My hands and arms were filthy and I stopped at a gas station in the upcoming town, but they did not allow people to use their facilities and they were the only gas station in town. I asked if anyone else in town had a restroom and he said no place that was open after 5pm. And it was a hair past 5.

I headed on to the church…to do the demo and managed to beat the members their. I washed myself in the spigot. BTW…the name of this particular baptist church was Calvary Baptist.

In the few moments before the pastor and members arrived, the wheels began to spin in my mind. However, I arrested my own thoughts until the copier was delivered and I was on my way home.

In the next few moments of travel I determined a lot of the symbolism of those moments.

The blown out tire was me/my soul.
The new tire was something I couldn’t get on my own, it was salvation.
The boy was a symbol for Christ.
The horse, the Holy Ghost, in other words how Christ moves.
The trooper, God the Father, the Law.
(This part came to me later)…The fact all three were black is so I would notice they were all the same. If they had been white, as I am, I probably would have been to thick headed to notice they were different than me.
The vice-grips…his atonement…the only thing that would help me get the tire (salvation)
To top it all off…The only place I could get clean was at the water of Calvary (blood of Christ).

After these things sort of “clicked together”. I felt the presence of something other than myself. I believe it was the Holy Spirit confirming what I had concluded. I didn’t feel all warm and fuzzy good. More like someone was speaking to me in pure thought. It was then and there I pulled over and asked my Savior into my heart. Shortly after I was baptized in the church I grew up in.

Since that time we have had three children and my family and I are part of a growing and dynamic church. For many years now, I have served as the bassist for the orchestra. My small group meetings are comprised mostly of the families of the orchestra and I teach some of the classes. I even coach my kids in the local sports programs. I have done well with my career and am the sales manager for the company I work for. My wife has been able to open her own business and is a respected member of the community as well.

At age 20, I never thought I would live to see age 30. It is amazing what Christ can do and anything that has happened to my benefit, I give him all praise and glory.

I am so thankful for what God has blessed me with. For those that happen to read this and have yet to meet Christ Jesus, I hope you will consider asking him to be the Lord of your life and commit yourself to do your best to follow his teachings.

Respectfully,

Beautiful story, I hope Catholic Answers gives you any answers you need on Catholicism, or anything else. I think the High way Symbolizes the Journey don’t you?

Great stuff Angel. I agree and hadn’t really thought of that. Thanks for adding to my testimony… that is how Baptist’s say “Let the plagiarism begin!”

you welcome, may G-d bless you, and lets hope you don’t have anymore spare tires!🙂

If you are a Catholic, why spell God like G-d??? That’s how the Jews say it.
Because in Jewish Tradition they so respect the Lord’s name, even the word G-d (which is what he is). That they take out the “o” so the word can not be mutilated or disrespected.
I want to do the same thing, just showing a little more extra respect to lord’s name.

That to me isn’t showing respect because the Jews reject Jesus. Why not do what the Christian faith does? They spell it GOD.
