Hello,

I have been raised by an atheist father and a non-practising Lutheran mother, but I have been thinking and praying quite a lot lately and I feel that I want to convert to Catholicism. I think my mother would understand, but not father, he always says religion is silly.

How should I tell them, or should I wait until I’m eighteen and convert in secret? I am sixteen by the way. Also, please excuse my English.

Thank you and God bless you!

Honesty is the best policy. I converted last year at the age of 31, and I had anxiety about telling my Evangelical Protestant parents.

I found that my fears were mostly internal and my family has been very supportive. I can’t imagine your mother as a non practicing Lutheran, caring much, and even if your atheist father believes its silly, I can’t imagine him opposing it as opposing it would give it some form of validity.

With your dad, just emphasize that it is making you a better individual and he will likely approve.

Being 16, if they absolutely forbid it, respect them and do your own private study and save your conversion until you are 18 out of respect to them.

Prayers for you!

I would tell them now. From what you have said, be prepared for your father to try to argue you out of it. Your mother will be an unknown quantity and could surprise you either way. However, you are a minor and you will need to bend to their will ( like it or not ). What it all comes down to is are you willing to ask them if they are forbiding you to convert or not. If they aren’t you would be free to do so. If they are, then you will have to wait until your eighteen.

Thanks for your replies, I will tell them and if they forbid me I will respect that, but hopefully they understand me.
