I am going to be 18 soon and my mom is pentecostal and has raised me that way since I was really young. My dad’s entire side are Scottish Trinidadian catholics so naturally I was baptized in the catholic church. My mom was so angry that she forbid my dad to ever let his sister take us again. My dad was a cradle catholic but currently is not practicing. For a little be I liked pentecostal church and I even got baptized into it at a really young age. But when I hit 13 I started really questioning the pentecostal faith. So many problems came up, there were a lot of problems with the people, the messages are just so… I just felt it wasn’t for me. I was in catholic school for a couple years and although I hated the uniforms my favourite time was always mass. I think when I was 8 I went to mass for thr first time in a long time and when I turned 9 that same year I knew how the mass went and I knew all the prayers and I really wanted to be catholic. LOL (an early glimpse of my conversion story) I said a hail mary at home because that’s the one you prayed at the end of the day in my mom flipped she was all like: WE ARE CHRISTIANS WE DON’T WORSHIP MARY RAAAAAAAAWR!!!
haha and you know she said all kinds of stuff to get catholicism out of my mind but every now and then I always thought of being a catholic. After so much turmoil in the church we were in when I was 16 my family decided as a family we would pick a new church. Unfortunately we didn’t choose one we all liked my mom chose one she liked and didn’t allow us to go to one we all liked. Its one of those pentecostal/gospel churches and noisy and I hated it. My mom forced me into the choir and hey my type of church music is the stuff we sang in catholic school and of course Libera. (Google of you’ve never heard) I felt like I was being forced into a church that I don’t really want to be in. Then I had a big fight with my mom for missing choir practice and I tried telling her how I felt forced to go to this church and choir that I didnt want any part in. She raged and lectured me about how she was bringing me up the right way. At that point I was going to become an atheist then at that point something in reminded me that I used to love going to mass. Become catholic. God? Are you calling me to become catholic?
anyways I read up on the faith snuck out early on a sunday morning to get to 9:00 mass before I went to my moms 11:00 church service.
it was easy cuz mass stayed around a time frame of 1 hour so I’d get to her church pretty early. (I hope she forgives me for going behind her back like that and taking my brother with me. My brother loves the catholic church too and wants to go with me everytime I go) I’m going to be 18 soon and like now I am looking into churches to attend as well as RCIA. I feel not telling her would make her very mad. But she most certainly doesn’t want me to convert to a church she doesn’t agree with. She thinks I’m not christian because I show no interest in her church and all sorts of untrue stuff. I want to be a full practicing catholic but well she’s really been preventing me. She’s so stubborn too like I asked if I could go to a different church from her and she raged again saying how bad it would look if I did that. There is no reasoning with her at all. How do I go about this?
