Telling women (and men) with grey hair to colour it

I thought grey hair would be worse than death back when I had no life. Then I got more involved in things that matter to me and was proud of my greys. Then I felt lousy about not achieving enough in my life and started dyeing it again. I think whether grey hair is a crown as it’s supposed to be depends on whether we have as much to show for our years as we feel comfortable with. I wish I had more to show for my time. I feel like finals are coming up and I haven’t finished my class project.

I was excited to be getting my gray hair! I don’t have to ASK for the senior discounts at the restaurant now!

Am interested to hear from guys how much expectation they think there is that they will colour their grev hair or is the old idea that greying was distinguishing on a guy (but ageing on a woman) still around . Certainly such hair products are advertised more now for guys.
I don’t really know because most people around me know my opinions too well to bother making comments that incorporate a gender double standard or to that even faintly intimate I should alter my natural appearance in any way, especially in regard to anything to do with my employment. And all jokes aside, I’d have to say nobody amongst our friends really thinks that way anyway.

I don’t color my hair for me: I do it for my children 😃
I can’t have my poor kids being embarrased by a gray headed mother.
Seriously,I had my last baby when I was 42 (almost 4 years ago) and I don’t want to hear the comments about her being my grandchild.I’m nowhere near ready for that!
I have very dark brown hair naturally but my grays are silver so when I finally do give up the dyeing,I will have lovely silver hair.
I do mine at home and it only costs a couple of bucks a month so expense is not an issue with me.

I never wanted to colour my hair cause I like the colour it is naturally. But I’m only 22 for goodness sake and I am going grey already! My temples are obviously streaked with grey and I have enough in the rest of my hair to be quite noticeable. I think it would be different if I were in my 40s, I might not mind as much…

Some of my kids and my wife and others in her family started turning grey quite early. I am now 72 and still only about half grey. Some of our youngest had a mother with grey hair and then she started coloring it. They actually thought that ones hair got darker with age. When finally my good wife decided to quit coloring the very youngest was quite surprised. He is just 32 now and half grey. Looks quite distingushed. I once had a colleague who couldn’t wait till he was grey. Said it made him look older and filled with wisdom.

Seen from the front my hair is pure white but approach me from behind and my hair is dark brown.
Interesting affect but I was getting tired of it.

My hairdresser suggested “lowlights” - similar to highlights but rather than using a lighter color dye on the brown she uses a darker color on the grey. I love the effect and have been doing this for 4 years now. I go 16 weeks between colorings and my hairdresser alternates between which strands of hair she dyes so the hair goes 32 weeks before getting dyed again.

It is up to you. If you like the way you look with grey hair then you should leave it.
But if you are looking for a different option, think about lowlights!

JennBob a friend of mine coloured her hair for similar reasons. She was white by the time she was 25 and looked stunning … but … she was a high school teacher and she found the students had difficulty relating to her.

This is a bit hypothetical for me–A quick spray of Pledge, some buffing and I am out of the house.
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Agreed!

And for all the balding men, please avoid “the rug.” Please. Become aquainted with and comfortable with your head, yes even proud! Do as Poly Sci Prof and embrace whatever you have, don’t have or are losing! The alternatives are (shudder) not fooling anyone. Baldness is not unattractive, and there is someting very appealing about anyone, man or woman who can embrace signs of aging with panache, despite the culture’s dictates.
My own hair looks to be heading towards white. I just need to find out how to care for it so it doesn’t resemble a whisk broom. 😉

God Bless All,
Peace,
Kelly

I’m 57. I have brown hair turning gray and I plan to let it. I have very, very thick hair and it grows fast!! If I colored it, I’d have to touch it up every other day. So I let it go. I like it.

I started to color my hair when I was about 40, intend to color it until the day I die, and want it colored right before my funeral. And I am telling my kids that if I ever have to go to a nursing home, they better set aside money to get my hair colored, or I will cut them out of my will.😃

I started dyeing my hair earlier this year. I’m 48. My hair started going grey (and a dull grey at that) quite a few years ago. I wasn’t in a rush to start dyeing (if I ever felt I needed too) but my hair is also fine and definitely not thick. After seeing myself in the mirror with my grandmother’s hair (she passed away a few years ago at 90) once too often I decided to dye it. Ultimately it’s a personal choice, and I would not suggest to someone they might want to consider it.

I started getting my first greys well before I turned 30. 😦 I dyed it for years, but when I got pregnant last time, I stopped, both for health and money reasons. It has all grown out to my natural color, which is brown with silver highlights. 😛 I don’t care anymore. It’s so much easier and cheaper to just leave it. 🤷 DH says he doesn’t care, so why should I?
When I pointed out DH’s first grey a year ago, he promptly went in and shaved his (admittedly already thinning) head. 😃 He looks great as a baldy–in fact I find him much more attractive this way than with his ratty looking thinning hair. I do miss the ponytail he had down his back when I met him, but that was almost a decade and a half ago. I’ll still take bald over what was left any day!
