I have a very emotional 8 year old girl and I was hoping some of you know of some useful Catholic books about temperaments and kids. I heard of one book by a father and a daughter on Catholic Connection several years ago, but I can’t remember the title, just that it had different temperaments and questions to help parents determine what temperament their child is and different ways they can parent the kids. This would really help if anyone could tell me the name of the book or something similar to it. Thank you!

Read “The Temperment God Gave Your Kids.”

If you don’t know much about the temperments, start with “The Temperment God Gave You.”

Both are written by A Catholic couple.

If the emotionality is extreme, your daughter may need psychological help.

There are books for kids in English about psychological issues that may be helpful. I’ve seen the following (the pictures are good):

What to Do When You Grumble Too Much

What to Do When Your Temper Flares

When my mildly autistic daughter was 7 or so and having trouble controlling her moods, I used to read that sort of book to her when she was taking a bath (a nice calm environment). The books give strategies for managing emotions.

Huebner has some other titles listed here:

I don’t think this is the book you’re referring to, but I recommend The Highly Sensitive Child by Elaine Aron. Some people (myself included, and I suspect my son) are what she terms “highly sensitive” and prone to overstimulation and feel things very strongly. I’m not done reading it yet myself, but it gives a great perspective on how to recognize signs that a child might be highly sensitive and methods on raising highly sensitive kids.

“The Explosive Child” and “Transforming the Difficult Child” are also good books for parents to read.

Here’s an excerpt from the first book:

Some people view the two books as being contradictory, but I found they complemented each other.

Those books focus on a non-pharmaceutical approach, but I think that one has to be open to the possibility that some children may in fact need medication in order to function well.

Also Florence Littauer’s books on the temperaments. There is one about kids and even goes through combinations of kid/ parent temperaments and how to deal with the differences. Like choleric parent/ sanguine child, etc. They helped our family immensely!

I have also read The Temperament God Gave You by Art and Laraine Bennett. It helped me understand myself and others better. Chapter 7 is titled “Parenting and Parent/Child Combinations”.
