Satan is hovering, tapping my shoulder, gloating,
His schadenfreude is exhilarating when I fall.
So, what do you do when you are tempted?

Prayer is good and possibly what first comes to mind.
Yet the mind wanders.
How about activities? Keep busy you say.
Can’t do that forever.

Perfection is not what I strive for because I know I’ll never get there.
How does one maintain keeping God first above all else?

It’s a common and typical problem,
Yes occupy your time with other things that stimulate the mind ,
There is also the reverse problem,as in, we become obsessed with our own faults,
So much so,that we don’t give ourselves a chance to breath ,
We see guilt and sin absolutely everywhere, ,
We then fail to experience life ,and God has given us all the gift of life,
Enjoy life, smell the Roses, yes you will have failings, but could we also fail,
Because we refuse to learn about life through experiences

How to maintain keeping God above all else… Just remember he’s with you at all times…

When your feeling Low, God is there…

When your feeling High, God is there…

God is in your heart and with you always, you are his child and thusly he love’s you from within, it’s God’s love that make’s you, an takes you and makes you ready to take on another day, it’s God’s love that puts you with those that dont believe in his word, it’s God’s love that keeps you upright in your task, it’s God’s love that hold’s you to be true to yourself and to nobody but him whilst you help all those around you… And bring them into his fold…

Although we may stray, from God’s sight and his love - it’s especially important to remember that God loves all his children… Big, Small, God loves us all.

When you are tempted then remember only this, it is not the Devil that test’s your heart and your faith, it is the Lord, who comes to you and test’s you now… Have faith in the word of God, for he ask’s little and nothing else. All he want’s is your faith and your trust in his divine judgement for he is - Merciful, Honorable, Trustworthy, Omniscient and Loving and in that draw solace… That God is with you always!

God forgives the Abaser, the Humiliator, the Downgrader… He upholds the downtroden and try’s to show them his path… As both the Restrainer, the Straightener… Yet few heed his word…

Exhaulted is the Lord and his name…

It’s not a cure all but something that has helped me in the past…

Laughter…

Yes - that’s right. When you recognize that you are being tempted, laugh at the ole’ tempter then make the sign of the cross and say, “begone”.

I’m not sure why it works but it does. I think it is because, in our recognition of being tempted, we see the work of God through our guardian angel. This means we already have a defender present.
Laughing serves two purposes. 1) It breaks the tension 2) It shows satan that you are not frightened by his attack…that you know where your true strength lies and you will not be drawn away from it.
So - the laughter is like you saying to the tempter, " Yea right you think I’m gonna fall for that one huh…"

It’s kind of hard to explain, but it does work (or at least it does for me).

Peace
James

It takes true devotion. When you fall you get back up and learn that God loves you even in your sin. When God becomes your Lord & Master you will call on him in times of temptation. Luke 22:46 And (Jesus) said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

thanks for your replies everyone.
James, I really like the laughter suggestion. I don’t laugh enough, and daboro, you are
correct, …“learn through experience.” I need to remember to live.

Someone told me today to “chip away.” I will remember your suggestions
and begin chipping. thank you.

There is only one solution when you are tempted…just one. The mind cannot think of two things at one time. Switch your mind to something else. That’s it. Always remember that…only one thing.

You mentioned that a person can’t keep busy forever. But they can. Who told you they couldn’t? Just think about the divine indwelling and talk to the Trinity. Or there if nothing to say, just bath in their presence within you realizing they are present out of love.

Perfection isn’t what I strive for either. What we strive for is Jesus, to be one with him. He is right within you in his grace. It is only a matter of how much you remember his presence. Just look at his wounds and tell him you love him. He will show you the way.

How does one maintain keeping God first? It is simpler than that. Just reflect on him within.

And above all else? Throw out the garbage, as many unnecessary distractions in your life as you can. That means all not some. But this takes practise and time. And everyone bulks at doing this, for we worship too many other gods in our lives. So just throw away one god at a time.

May the God of peace make you perfect in holiness.

This would be wonderful if it were only practical.

The problem is maintaining focus once the mind is switched to something else. Distractions bombard us from all directions continuously. It will only get worse. And it’s never going to stop.

That’s what’s good about prayer. It requires focus, patience, and inward gentleness.

Also switching your mind to a little spiritual reading ‘and’ writing about what you read, help deliver us.
