Ten Commandments

I’ve often wondered about the history and reason for the difference between Protestant and Catholic versions of the commandments. I’m familiar with the general anti-catholic claim. Has the Catholic version always been as it is today? I am a devout Catholic and am not usually persuaded by Protestant arguments, but it does seem that, when referencing scripture, one commandment has been deliberately been left out and the tenth split in two. Please explain. It is much appreciated.
