Just a few minutes ago I was tending to our family garden. Nothing big, just planting some vegetables. Is this a mortal sin?

No it isn’t ‘a mortal sin’
Did you also respect the holiness of the day? Jesus and the disciples were accused for picking corn to eat on the Sabbath. There is no question that Jesus and the disciples sinned by such an act.

From the CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH

2173 The Gospel reports many incidents when Jesus was accused of violating the sabbath law. But Jesus never fails to respect the holiness of this day.98 He gives this law its authentic and authoritative interpretation: "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath."99 With compassion, Christ declares the sabbath for doing good rather than harm, for saving life rather than killing.100 The sabbath is the day of the Lord of mercies and a day to honor God.101 "The Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath."102

2184 Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done,"121 human life has a rhythm of work and rest. the institution of the Lord’s Day helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.122

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.123 Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. the faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

The charity of truth seeks holy leisure - the necessity of charity accepts just work.124

If you were planting marijuana plants then you would have been sinning

Moral theologians have come to the general agreement that anything from 2.5-3 hours of servile work constitutes grave matter, all other unnecessary servile work is only venial sinful.

Tending to your garden on a Sunday, if it is your hobby and you find it recreational and restorative, is not necessarily sinful, providing you attended Mass and spent some time in prayer, spiritual reading, or in the company of family or friends. If however, you woke at the crack of dawn, put on your gardening clothes, and spent all day in the perennial battle against weeds and plant diseases, it would be sinful. Sunday is supposed to be a day where we honor the Lord, and concern ourselves with restoring our own souls.

Is doing any sort of work on Sunday sinful? I didn’t know that.

No. Sadly studying and paper writing isn’t a sin. 😦

It’s doing unnecessary servile/manual labor type work and unnecessary shopping that’s sinful.

Was it a Mary Garden? If so, I would say any work performed in the creation or maintainence of such a garden would be considered a devotion acceptable for Sunday.

This is generally what I believe.

i am new here. why are some words highlighted in bold red letters? i find it distracting.

Remember that we are not Pharisees. The Pharisees weren’t even allowed to pick up a branch that had fallen down on the Sabbath.

I don’t know how true this is but my RCIA teacher told me that we should strive to keep the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law. Personally, I think we should keep both. However, even the letter of the law does not say that it is a sin to tend to your garden on Sunday, cook on Sunday, or even work on Sunday if it is a job such as being a nurse at a hospital or a policeman or something of that sort.

oops! i just rechecked and now there are no more red letters. nevermind, mea culpa.😊
