Yes an Aussie in the south east of the country. Are you USA or Canada

I really hope I can go, but I have band practice (it’s a college course) Wednesday nights. I’m hoping my professor will let me off the hook for that night so I can finally experience it.

You have a tenebrae service at your parish? It’s nice to know more parishes have this available.

The choir is chanting the Lords Prayer tonight, unless the Bishop hushes it and does this himself.

Pray for us 🕊️🙏🙀

I thought it was a universal thing, but I just checked a neighboring parish’s website and saw that they aren’t doing it. I suppose I’m lucky.

You are lucky! I’d never even heard of it until I found this forum.

This is a beautiful service. Go if you can
After reading this on my parrish’s website I saw these listed. Have two questions.
  1. What is a tenebrae?
  2. Is the Easter Vigil a mass? (opposed to just lighting candes etc) A family member mentioned that one time they went to an Easter Vigil but it wasn’t a mass - not sure if they are confused.
Tenebrae is Lauds and Matins, two of the morning prayers from the Liturgy of the Hours - which all priests are required to pray daily,

Yes, the Easter Vigil is a mass. But is VERY DIFFERENT from the typical Mass, which is why a family member may have been confused and thought it wasn’t a mass.

The Easter Vigil starts outside with a fire. Then, the flame is brought inside to light the candles… eventually 7 readings & 7 psalms are read, then a NT Epistle, then another psalm, then the Gospel.

Then, then baptisms take place, then renewal of baptismal promises, confirmation, Eucharistic prayers, First Communion, then finally Communion for everyone else.

At the parish I was baptized it, the Easter Vigil starts at 8 PM and lasts until close to midnight.

Needless to say, it’s the longest Mass of the year.

God Bless

Tuesday of Holy Week: Chrism Mass with the Archbishop…Bishop blesses the new holy oils for the coming year…
Just to be clear for people reading this… the ordinary time for the Chrism Mass is the morning of Holy Thursday. But if the Diocese is geographically too large (or for other logistical reasons) the Chrism Mass can be moved to another day.
Holy Saturday has the Easter VIvl. It is a long Mass, the biggest night of the entire church year.

… 7 readings with only the small tapers…
To be clear… it’s 7 Old Testament Readings, with a psalm between each one. Then 1 NT Epistle, an 8th psalm, and then the Gospel.

So 17 readings total 🙂
