I would like to have a Tenebrae service on Good Friday evening but cannot seem to find up-to-date Catholic resources listing the readings and music for the service. Frankly, if there is a source that describes the service from beginning to end that I could use, that would be great! How many readers do I need? Must we have a Priest (our parish doesn’t have one)? If you can help, many thanks!

This is the one that the cathedral in Saint Louis used in 2009. There is much variation that can be done, since it’s usually not liturgical.

Thank you very much! This will be most helpful. Now all I need to do is decide how many readers I will need and how to construct the Tenebrae Hearse to hold the candles.

God Bless You!

Contact the Office of Liturgy at your Diocese. They will provide you the information you need - including clarifying what services may be conducted without a priest (and helping you arrange for a priest when needed). Good thing about the Church, we do not have to be a lone ranger out there, we have the Diocese in charge!

Tenebrae isn’t really a Good Friday service. I have only seen it done before the Triduum, usually on the Wednesday night before.

It has been my understanding that it can be said on any day between Wednesday and Saturday. In my Anglo-Catholic past, we had used it on Friday in the evening. It was fitting in that it is like a funeral service.

We have conducted this liturgy for 20 years at my parish. Alwyas on Wednesday evening.
