It didn’t do well because it had a confusing plot and didn’t have the dark storyline of the other Terminator movies. It was in fact tushed out.
One of the reasons that Paramount rushed the movie is because the movie rights to the Terminator franchise reverts back to James Cameron in 2019.

Schwarzenegger’s other movies where he had a lead role, since he ended his service as the Governor of California, have performed poorly in the U.S. What box office Genisys is generating is largely due to fans wanting to see Ah-nold in his most iconic role one last time. (That said, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Genisys … but I may be in the minority there.)

No offense, but it’s my understanding that a feature film has to gross two to three times its budget at the worldwide box office in over to break even.It’s made over $317 million on a $155 million dollar budget.

I saw a critic’s review on Rotten Tomatoes that said only “Stephen Hawking himself” would be able to enjoy the film because of all the confusing time travel plotlines.
That and the PG-13 factor was enough to not see it. You can’t really be the original Terminator and T2. They’re just too good to ever top.

Judging from what is said in this article, Terminator Genisys would have to gross at least $450 million at the international box office in order to break even.It’s already made over two times the budget. And it’s not done yet.

A movie needs to gross more than twice it’s budget to recover production costs, because theatres get half the gross, but that ignores the marketing budget which is probably another $100M. IOW, TG will need to gross something like $450M to break even.It’s made over $317 million on a $155 million dollar budget. I’d call that a success. And it was voted third on which Terminator film is your favorite poll on imdb.com.
On topic, I don’t think the PG-13 rating hurt it. The Avengers was rated PG-13 and grossed over $1.5B.
