Terrible distortions introduced by "hippie culture"

I’m sorry, but the above is a thorough failure to understand historically (1) what actually took place, from the subculture to the wider culture, and (2) how cultures are influenced over time.

The cause of massive fornication & cohabitation (which btw is the root of the high rate of abortion today in the U.S.) is not “Adult Bookstores.” Those bookstores were already everywhere prior to the hippie culture. Ditto for topless bars. They were rampant in certain locations. The judges did not create, let alone initiate, such cultural realities. Rather, the youth that came of age during the hippie culture of which we speak was the definiing population that gave Permission to alternative lifestyles in general. They were the Baby Boom generation, and thus their numbers were high, their influence strong.

The way the law works on a pracitcal level in this country is that, once behaviors become more acceptable already in the mainstream of society – once they reach a critical mass of existence – those behaviors then become “legitimized” socially, first. Social integration/absorption of everyday behavior evolves into legitimization of that behavior, formally, after individuals and/or companies/groups/institutions bring concerns to the court. In my opinion it is hardly the ideal way to proceed with legal decisions (and that practical process is decried often, by thoughtful professionals in the field – judges, lawyers), but it is unfortunately the way legal decisions have evolved in this country, particularly in the area of social behavior.

The last thing that the hippie culture was interested in were Adult Bookstores and Topless Bars. Topless Bars were for the externally button-down fathers of the hippies. And adult bookstores existed for the grandfathers of those hippies.

One of the alliances with the hippie culture was in fact The Peace Movement. The two features were not interchangeable, but there was a great deal of overlap. Many hippies took global and local peace quite seriously. It was part of their social consciousness, and they did engage in a great deal of peaceful civil disobedience for causes they believed in – first & foremost efforts against not just the Vietnam War, but war in general and with the industrial-military complex, against which they took practical steps whenever possible (as consumer activists, as voters, etc.) Many of them were also conscientious objectors and were able to legitimately support that claim, given their history of activism against the military.

Because of their social justice stands, xombined with their (romantic) attractiveness, they did indeed gain (i.m.o.) far too much credibility with the mainstream media, comprehensively. That, together with their sheer numbers, population-wise as The Baby Boomers, resulted in a sea-change morally in this country, more than any other single event or movement – of which another was The Pill, of which a third was Women’s “liberation” (some of it legitimate, some of it quite misnamed, of course, or at least resulting in distortions of the term “liberated”). The three factors combined were the Trifecta of moral (especially sexual) relativism of the late 20th century through today.

So this entire spiral of relativism profoundly contributed to Roe v. Wade & the continued expectation of abortion on demand at any stage. (Because again, legal decisions follow social norms, not vice-versa; the groundwork for Roe was laid in the mid-'60’s, and it was not adult bookstores.) Now what we have sealing this trend is the unfortunate disordered level of expected “privacy” in this country, combined with a disproportionately lmagnified emphasis on “rights” (vs. responsibilities), which is not the topic of this thread but which does make reversing social trends even more difficult.
I lived through each phase. I can document what I write. Prior to the 1970s, the only way to get dirty magazines, aside from Playboy, was to go to the liquor store run by this gruff looking guy. He had a handful behind the counter and no kids were going to get them.

This was the beginning of a new wave of social engineering that was highly financed, protected by the best lawyers (to keep those religious nuts away), and designed to work as it did. No Pope in 1968 was going to convince women to listen, much less men, and affect the sales of The Pill. Then legalized abortion, then No-Fault Divorce, then zero sexual standards.

This was engineered and planned. The mainstream media did not give them credibility, the mainstream media became part of the movement as pockets of resistance were bought out by large corporations.

Recent legal decisions did not follow social norms in any way, shape or form. Roe v Wade was based on nonsense - penumbras and emanations. Give me a break. The same with No-Fault Divorce. How lovely. It’s nobody’s fault anymore. The Hippies were one part of the mechanism, that’s all.

Peace,
Ed

Ludicrous. Opinions carry weight - gather enough folks of a similar mind and you have a movement.

Now, this from your own link, Ed, for the benefit of vz71:

"Two-Thirds of the Time
It’s the wife who files for divorce in about two-thirds of divorce cases, at least among couples who have children. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the proportion has changed slightly over the years; for example, in 1975, approximately 72 percent of the divorces in the U.S. were filed by women, whereas by 1988, only about 65 percent were filed by women.

“The Same throughout the 19th Century
A study reported in the American Law and Economics Review in 2000, “These Boots Are Made for Walking: Why Most Divorce Filers are Women” also showed that more recently, women file more than two-thirds of divorce cases in the US. Even though the individual states’ data vary somewhat and the numbers have fluctuated over time, throughout most of the 19th century about 60 percent of divorce filings were by women.
Moreover, in some of the states where no-fault divorce was introduced, over 70 percent of the divorce filings were by women. Among college-educated couples, the percentage of divorces initiated by wives is a whopping 90 percent.”

Data DO carry weight as well.

The Hippies presented living bad role models to people. In between carrying protest signs and spending a few hours at a sit-in, what did they do? And once the Vietnam war ended, what did they do? Some of those underground newspapers turned into porn rags.

And Underground Comics? You can’t give them away today, but at the time, Robert Crumb, a great draftsman, wasted his time on perverted sex stories. The same with Vaugh Bode. And let’s look at the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Smoke dope, pop pills, have sex with the promiscuous young lady on welfare, buy sex books and drink beer. Off the Pigs! Kill the police! was featured in one issue.

It was nicely organized. If the devil has a specialty, it is repackaging evil. To make it all seem “new” again. Woodstock Nation! Power to the People! We got nothing. It was full of sound and fury, and slogans.

“Peace brother! Make love not war.”

Peace,
Ed

Wishing people “peace”? That’s mighty hippie of you, Ed!😃

One of the greatest out-pourings of the Spirit came during the time of this culture shift and many came to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ.
The bible tells me that the Holy Spirit was received by the apostles shortly after Christ left the earth.
What are you talking about?
And please explain your evidence that this event is any greater then any other miracle or blessing God has bestowed in the past 2000 years.

During the founding of our country you could find printed religious works and printed pornographic works! Those long haired, rebellious, tobacco smoking, slave owning, mistress condoning, tea partying freaks ruined our country:eek:…oh wait a minute…they founded it:eek:…they wrote the constitution, the framework of democracy:eek:…quick everyone run to Ed’s world where love and peace and righteousness flowers:rolleyes:…oh wait a minute, the Church population statistically reflects the general populations ills! Ed, where do we go now? Who is to blame? Who can turn this pandemic around?
Cherry picking of the worst kind here.
And it is also a red herring.

Sin has been in existence since Genesis. No one here has denied this.

What is pointed out, and rightfully so is that the ‘hippie culture’ took this sinful behaviour and sought to make it the norm. The consequences of this cannot be denied. The culture itself also cannot be denied.

The Spirit is poured out to all believers in all generations since Pentecost.

I said it was one of the greatest. I am talking about these two events, perhaps one continuous event.
  1. The Catholic charismatic renewal is traced to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1967.
  2. Also, many came to faith in Jesus through the Jesus movement in the late 60’s.
The Holy Spirit is responsible for both since that is part of His ministry.

Having only quoted half of the reply, I imagine you would be confused.
Perhaps you should read the rest of the response.
The rest of the reply I read and understood, still I need clarification of what I was cherry picking and what is the red herring.

You wish to take the focus off of the hippie culture by claiming the presence of sin at other times in history.
Yet no one has claimed the sin never existed.
You are developing an argument against something that was never claimed.
That is a red herring.

If these sins existed at other times in history, what"s the beef with the Hippies? They may have brought attention to non-Christian behaviors, but they certainly didn’t invent them.

Looks to me like the red herring is the allusion to the “evil” of the hippies. These cultural changes occurred during our lifetimes - this is the reason they seem so significant and, perhaps, appalling. If we could live to be 150 years old maybe we would witness a swing back to ultra-conservative, dare I say “repressed”, behaviors.

Is there a solution to this “problem”, or is this just a rant?

Hi, Genevieve. As I said in my first post, they most assuredly did not invent fornication, lol. The difference is, unlike previously in the U.S.A. (at least), they *mainstreamed *fornication. It was suddenly legitimate, even admirable. They altered the language signficantly to achieve that, as well. “Free love” is inaccurate, as I mentioned. It was libertine promiscuity, combined with (to some degree) an abandonment of, or at least a newly casual attitude toward, marriage. I think you’re implying that there might have been other social forces contributing to these results (and there undoubtedly were), but I truly think that the size and influence of the hippie culture (because they had so much political influence and were such a curiosity of the media) was the major factor in any Perfect Storm. They romanticized fornication and cohabitation. It is not the only reason for the large percentage of unmarried couples today, but it is, i.m.o., a significant cause. There’s nothing romantic about irresponsibility, but the charm of the movement gave that impression.

As has been mentioned on this thread a number of times…
The hippie culture certainly did not invent any new sins.
What they did is take them to a whole new level.

It is not taking the focus off, it was pointing out to Ed and the rest of the constitutional conservatives that pornography and fornication existed at the founding of our country. The hippie culture brought out of the closet the sin that was there all along but it was not the hippie that took advantage of this but the outlaws, pimps and promoters of pornography. Their main clients being the hypocrites of the establishment.

Your application of the red herring is incorrect.

The hippie culture found out that sin has consequences, that is why it lasted so short a time. However, the hippie cultures challenge to the establishment brought about a freedom to challenge the thought that just because the authority says something is so, it is to be followed and not to be questioned.

This questioning exposed hypocrites and it is they who complained the hardest. The non-hypocrites stood up just fine. Then as the hippie aged they joined the norm of society to live out their lives.

They don’t have to be romanticized because our society has also benefited from the freedom of thought they espoused. Many beneficial discoveries have come from people not accepting the status quo. The consequence of sin caused many to back off from the extremes.

Those times were what they were, but the so called distortions were generations in the making.

A fact that NO ONE has argued against.

In other words, the hippie culture took these sins and brought them to a whole new level. You are quite correct that they brought the sins to the forefront. You need to bear in mind many here are saying the same thing.

Right. If we wish to ignore the drugs and sexual deviency that they also brought about.
The consequences of what they did continue to this day.
This questioning exposed hypocrites and it is they who complained the hardest. The non-hypocrites stood up just fine. Then as the hippie aged they joined the norm of society to live out their lives.
Norm of society being what exactly?
The hippie culture degraded the norms of our society and brought about a disrespect and immorality that lives on today.
That has become the new norm.
They don’t have to be romanticized because our society has also benefited from the freedom of thought they espoused. Many beneficial discoveries have come from people not accepting the status quo. The consequence of sin caused many to back off from the extremes.
Those times were what they were, but the so called distortions were generations in the making.
I would agree with you that the makeup of what happened was generations in the making.
The hippies were reacting to the greatest generation…whech was reacting to WWI, which was reacting to…etc.
But it would be wrong to attempt to remove guilt for actions taken from a generation that took those actions.
The manufacturer of a gun is not responsible for a murder commited with it later on.
Likewise the previous generations cannot be held responsible for what the hippies did.

Let’s look at what the Hippies stood for. What they said was later marketed by the mainstream media.

“We will burn this country down if we have to!”

“Down with the Establishment!”

“Off the Pigs!” Kill the Police!

“Don’t trust anybody over 30!” Which would include mom, dad, priests and nuns.

“Free love!” Sex with anybody. Adult Bookstores, topless bars and strip clubs - all started in the 1970s, would do everything to REINFORCE this. They were protected from religious nuts who protested against them by highly paid lawyers who said they had the constitutional right to bring filth into our neighborhoods.

“I don’t need no piece of paper to live with my old lady.” Marriage not required.

Immoral sex was heavily marketed in the 1970s. The Hippies played their part in trying to convince God-fearing Americans that their way of life was better. “Try it, you’ll like it.” They were wrong. Unfortunately, some fell into the trap.

Fornication was referred to as “natural acts” by a Hippie friend of mine at the time.

What was once private scandal was marketed as an “alternative lifestyle.”

Finally, “Hey man. If it feels good, do it.”

Slavery to the flesh, no respect for any authority and do what you want to do. The same radical individualism that caused anarchy then is causing anarchy now in our society.

Peace,
Ed

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. By their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, shall be cut down, and shall be cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.
