I am truly sorry for your childhood. It is not easy coming from toxic families. BTDT. But for your own sake, please find true forgiveness of your folks. It eats at you like a cancer if you don’t. Talk with someone for spiritual advisement so that you can put this hatred behind you. HUGS
As to the question about the twins…If you feel that you need to be involved go and talk to your mother. Tell her you are concerned about her and the new babes. And that you want to be there to see that they are all getting on well. It is in fact a sin to lie/misrepresent yourself as a “friend” to gain information. The ends does NOT justify the means. Sin is sin. We can not do a wrong just because something good will come of it. My thought on the issue of personal safety, only go in person with someone else. Perhaps someone who is rather impossing in appearance?? (doesn’t have to be a person who can kick butt; for instance, I am disabled, and have a very large german shepherd as a service dog----he frightens folks to stay back even though he’d more than likely lick them to death. Not sure what he’d do if someone were to come at me though. PTL never had to find that out. But again, his mere prescence speaks volumes)
Sadly, simply being born to an addict won’t cut the ties of mother/child.
What does the law say?
Currently there is only one state, South Carolina, that holds prenatal substance abuse as a criminal act of child abuse and neglect. Other states have laws that address prenatal substance abuse:
Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota’s health care providers are required to test for and report prenatal drug exposure. Virginia health care providers are only required to test.
Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Utah, and Rhode Island’s health care providers are required to report prenatal drug exposure. Reporting and testing can be evidence used in child welfare proceedings.
Some states consider prenatal substance abuse as part of their child welfare laws. Therefore prenatal drug exposure can provide grounds for terminating parental rights because of child abuse or neglect. These states include: Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Some states have policies that enforce admission to an (name removed by moderator)atient treatment program for pregnant women who use drugs. These states include: Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
In 2004, Texas made it a felony to smoke marijuana while pregnant, resulting in a prison sentence of 2-20 years. **********************
So there are some remedies available. If her physician has confided in you, breaking the pt confidentiality he has sworn to uphold, no matter what the reason, he/she should have no issue reporting maternal meth use to the authorities. This should have been done instead of breaking an oath. (again, ends doesn’t justify the means here either) As a doctor he is mandated to report these types of things to someone whom has authority to be informed. And someone who can do the most good to help the babies and yes your mother too with the entire METH issue.
So if it were me, I’d contact the attorney general of the state in which the expectant mother resides and find out what the applicable laws are. Then contact the doctor who so eagerly provided you with the meth part of the equation and inform him/her of the laws/guidelines.
Then, and the hardest part of all, you need to step away from it all. You need to find a way to forgive your folks once and for all and then you must move on. You will have done all you can here and spiritually to make things right. That is all you can do. And continue to pray for your folks and for the wee ones yet to be born.
Fr. Larry Richards has a great tape on confession, he deals specifically with those in our lives who repeatedly try to harm us. I think you will find much validation/peace in that exerpt of his tape.
Know that I will add your family to my prayers perpetually.
May you find peace in your heart!
May HE watch over and protect the twins!!
god bless
