Terrified I might commit a crime

For 99% of the time, I’m perfectly fine, and my sins are pretty small. But the other 1% of the time, I slip slowly into temptation, and eventually I get a very dark force surrounding and covering my forehead (I can feel it) and when this happens the world seems darker and all I want to do is a certain sin. But this certain sin is illegal, and will end up with me in jail. I already was arrested and went to jail for this sin a few years ago. And in the past few weeks I have been much more tempted to do this sin than all winter combined. I’m very scared because even though I have full control over my will, when this darkness comes over my head, my entire will is only to do this evil sin or something like it. This is why I am so scared, because even though I have full control over myself, in a way I almost don’t when this happens! And when the darkness comes over, it is 100 times harder to pray for myself, or to do anything but think of the sin.

EDIT:

This has been happening to me for many years, and it developed over time as a course of habit long before I became a Christian. This is why it reminds me of Mary Magdalene who Jesus drove 7 demons out of (presumably attacking via lustful temptations). I know 7 is the Biblical number of completeness which means Jesus can fully drive out demons from you and drive demons away from you. So what must I do to have this particular temptation (to commit this crime) fully removed from me, so it doesn’t overcome my will anymore? I know this question isn’t a prayer request but I am desperate. I have a wife and 4 kids to provide for, I can’t let myself go to jail. But I’m all out of ideas.

I would immediately go seek the advice of a good, holy
Priest. You may need deliverance from oppression.

Keep close to God. Receive the Sacraments frequently. Use holy water, and wear a Miraculous Medal, Brown Scapular and St. Benedict Crucifix.

I will pray for you. God bless you.

Maybe I’m way off base here, but I would talk to both a priest and a doctor. Do something.

It could be a mental issue (schizophrenia, OCD, etc.) or a spiritual problem along the lines of possession or attempted possession. Pray a lot, and please talk to a priest who can put you in touch with an exorcist who may be able to sort out what is happening with you. When it does happen, keep your prayer simple but forceful. Get away from me Satan! In the name of Jesus Christ! Do the sign of the cross in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It will also help take your focus away from those thoughts.

Learn ----memorize the prayer to St. Michael, and say that one too, regularly, and especially when tempted.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

I am sorry for your pain. I have a few suggestions.

Increase the grace of the Holy Spirit in your soul:
Go to Mass frequently, daily if possible.
Go to reconciliation frequently.
Pray ceaselessly, especially when those thoughts try to overtake you.
Read appropriate psalms from the bible.

Don’t drink or drug! (If those are things you do.) They lower your inhibitions.
Try to identify what might trigger these events. Avoid it.
Identify your vice: sex, money, power, thrill-seeking, etc. Avoid anything that can tempt you.
Confide in your wife.
Make yourself accountable. Plan your time and report in to your wife.
Keep VERY busy.
Give more time to your kids and wife.
Do not go out on your own without a specific plan for accountability.
Avoid being alone.

I don’t think you can fight this alone. It is so powerful and is such a huge risk to your soul, your loved ones, and the life you have built. Speak to a priest. Get counseling. If it gets too bad, see if you can check into a behavioral health facility on a 72-hour hold. Tell them you are a danger to others and they will have to find you a bed. It won’t be fun, but it may get you some good advice and get you over the worst days.
Behold me, O my God, at Your feet! I do not deserve mercy, but O my Redeemer, the blood with You have shed for me encourages me and obliges me to hope for it. How often I have offended You, repented, and yet have I again fallen into the same sin. O my God, I wish to amend, and in order to be faithful to You, I will place all my confidence in You. I will, whenever I am tempted, instantly have recourse to You. Until now, I have trusted in my own promises and resolutions and have neglected to recommend myself to You in my temptations. This has been the cause of my repeated failures. From this day forward, be You, O Lord, my strength, and this shall I be able to do all things, for “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” Amen.
Almighty and most Merciful God, graciously hearken unto our prayers; and free our hearts from the temptations of evil thoughts; that we may worthily become a fit habitation for Thy Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER TO
SAINT MICHAEL
THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen…

I am now feeling the presence of demons in my room and house, and it is much more severe than usual! And because I am deeply in a state of very grave mortal sin, I am terrified of the demons, since I don’t believe I have any protection from God or the saints or angels.

Please tell me the right subforum where I can ask a question about what to do about this? I don’t want to clutter the Prayer Intentions board with requests for advice.

Catholic Living>Spirituality

Go to confession ASAP. Call your parish and talk to a priest. Tell him it is a spiritual emergency.

We ALWAYS have protection from God when we are resisting temptation! He is right there with you!

Pray the prayer to St. Michael that I posted. Scream it out loud! Declare your desire to follow the Lord!

I’d say the Spirituality forums is where you need to go.

Get out of your house, now, if possible. Take your computer if you can, and get to the nearest church. Even outside of it, if you can’t get in. Or to a restaurant. Or anywhere but home. Somewhere public, perhaps, if your sin is mitigated by being around other people who can accuse and arrest you.

Then, I strongly recommend seeing a priest, posthaste. See a psychiatrist.

In any case, we’re praying for you, buddy. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us.

Pray this prayer, Null, everyday if you have to:
I put off all forms of fear and put on the new nature with its courage. I put off all forms of weakness and put on the new nature with its strength. I put off all forms of lust and put on the new nature with its righteousness, purity, and honesty. I am trusting You to show me how to make this practical in my daily life. In every way I stand into the victory of the ascension and glorification of the Lord Jesus Christ, whereby all the principalities and powers were made subject to Him.
I claim my place in Christ as victorious with Him over all the enemies of my soul. Blessed Holy Spirit, I pray that You would fill me. Come into my life, break down every idol and cast out every foe. I am thankful, Heavenly Father, for the expression of Your will for my daily life as You have shown me in Your Word. I, therefore, claim all the will of God for today. I am thankful that You have blessed me with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. I am thankful that You have begotten me unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. I am thankful that You have made a provision so that today I can live filled with the Spirit of God with love and joy and peace, with long-suffering, gentleness and goodness, with meekness, faithfulness and self-control in my life.
I recognize that this is Your will for me and I therefore reject and resist all the endeavors of satan and his wicked spirits to rob me of the will of god. I refuse in this day to believe my feelings and I hold up the Shield of Faith against all the accusations and distortion and insinuations that satan would put into my mind. I claim the fullness of the will of God for my life today. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I completely surrender myself to You, Heavenly Father, as a living sacrifice. I choose not to be conformed to this world. I choose to be transformed by the renewing of my mind, and I pray that You would show me Your will and enable me to walk in all the fullness of Your will today.
I am thankful, Heavenly Father, that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, to the casting down of imagination and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge God, and to bring every thought into obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, in my own life today I tear down the strongholds of satan and smash the plans of satan that have been formed against me. I tear down the strongholds of satan against my mind, and I surrender my mind to You, blessed Holy Spirit.
I affirm, Heavenly Father, that You have not given me the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind. I break and smash the strongholds of satan formed against my emotions today and I give my emotions to you. I smash the strongholds of satan formed against my will today, I give my will to You and choose to make the right decisions of faith. I smash the strongholds of satan formed against my body today, I give my body to You recognizing that I am your temple. I rejoice in Your mercy and goodness.

Heavenly Father, I pray that now and through this day You would strengthen and enlighten me. Show me the way satan is hindering and tempting and lying and distorting the truth in my life. Enable me to be the kind of person that would please You. Enable me to be aggressive in prayer and faith. Enable me to be aggressive mentally, to think about and practice Your Word, and to give You Your rightful place in my life. Again, I cover myself with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and pray that You, blessed Holy Spirit, would bring all the work of the crucifixion, all the work of the resurrection, all the work of the glorification, and all the work of Pentecost into my life today.
I surrender myself to You. I refuse to be discouraged. You are the God of all hope. You have proven Your power by resurrecting Jesus Christ from the dead, and I claim in every way this victory over all the satanic forces in my life. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ with thanksgiving and praise to You, alone. Amen.
You will get out of it, you are being tested and you must resist, eventually this trial will end.

Call your parish now. Tell them you must speak with a Priest today. If no one picks up, call whatever phone number is given for an emergency situation. If that doesn’t work, call another Parish. Make a good confession today. Tell the Priest everything, don’t hold back. Trust Father’s advice and counsel. I am going to the Adoration Chapel today. I will pray a Rosary for you.

I am copying and pasting and editing a bit from a post i wrote elsewhere; however, I think that you might want to call your diocese (search by using Catholic along with the city, otherwise you might get an Episcopalian of other type of diocese). The diocese ought to be able to refer you. If they are unable to help, I’d look up Catholic churches and call the ones which have Mass in Latin–they may be able to refer you if the diocese can’t.

A person’s needing the help of an exorcist does NOT mean they are posessed as in the movies. There are many minor exorcisms. A priest knowledgeable in this area will be able to help you if this problem is supernatural.

if you are suffering from a supernatural problem, here is info about how to learn about this area.

Sensus Traditionis Multimedia page

Go tk about halfway down the page, and there are 8 talks under the Spiritual Theology classes–the last two are about demons; the second of the two has helps.

Just below are several under the heading Spiritual Warfare. Listen to the last two first as they are more comprehensive, but the others provide lots of detail.

And in the section below that, labeled Spiritual Conferences, there is one called Spiritual Protection, a general outline.

**The first line of defense is always: prayer, fasting/mortification, almsgiving, *staying close to the sacraments, esp confession. *Praying for deliverance and fasting some more. **

This is “penanceware”–he requests donations of either $1/each, a decade of the Rosary or other penitential act *for his intentions. *If you send money, he uses all that money to help people.

I said a prayer for you. Here is a simple prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that might help.

Traditional Prayer of Reparation from the Irish

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me.
O God, forgive me for all the sins of my life;
The sins of my youth and the sins of my age,
The sins of my body and the sins of my soul,
The sins I have confessed and the sins I have forgotten,
The sins against others in thought, word, and deed,
My sins of omission.
O, my God, I am sorry for all my sins, because You are so good;
And I will not sin again with the help of God.
God be merciful to me, a sinner.
Divine Heart of Jesus, convert sinners, save the dying,
Deliver the holy souls in purgatory.

Fasting is a good spiritual weapon. Here is a prayer from Ash Wednesday you can say on the days you fast.

Grant we beseech thee, O Lord that we who now with prayer and fasting do put upon us the armour of our Christian warfare being defended by the power of abstinence, may fight manfully against all spiritual wickedness through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Psalm 23

23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

I try to fast, but within a few hours my mood changes and instead of feeling repentant or scared for my soul, I feel secure again, so I don’t fast for more than a few hours, if that.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

†

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

†

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

I am praying that you were able to reach a Priest today.

Please let him know everything and leave nothing out.
