My father was brought up Catholic in a fervent Catholic family. He tells me that as a child, he was terrified that the Blessed Virgin Mary would visit him. The sitcom character Father Ted seemed to have the same phobia.

Were any of you other cradle Catholics frightened of the Blessed Virgin when you were younger?

No. I loved Her immensely when I was a child. Still do. She is our Mother.

Indeed she is, and as a convert to Catholicism, I love her. That’s why I find it really interesting that my father grew up Catholic feeling scared of Mary.

I would be so happy if our Blessed Mother would visit me!!!

Scared?? No way, Jose! :nope:

Father Ted is a spoof, and NOT to be taken as indicative of Catholic life.
The only one who is terrified of the Blessed Virgin is the prince of lies. And he should be.
Pray the rosary, and get to know Our Lady. She loves you.

I was afraid of the supernatural, ghosts and so on from having to watch scary things with my older siblings.

So that being said I believed Mary would know how to make Her presence known to people like that without scaring them, perhaps in a different way then just appearing.

I never watched Fr. Ted so I don’t know about that.

Celestial Host, did your father ever tell you why he was afraid? As a child I would have happy if she would have appeared to me.

As much as I loved the Virgin Mary and praying the Rosary, the idea of an “Our Lady of Fatima” situation happening to me directly has always scared me a bit, yes.

Also, a lot depends on what he heard as a child.
I remember my mother always pointing to a picture of the Child Jesus ( a really nice, framed one) in our living room and saying rather sternly…“The Baby Jesus is watching you!”.
Scared me for a while. I thought of Him as a snitch. 😃 For about 6 months.
Then, I started school and heard every day how much He loved me, and today, that framed antique picture has a proud place in my home.
But I never said “He’s watching you!” to my girls. LOL
In fact, as a child, I never wanted family pics or dolls in my bedroom. I hated the eyes staring at me in the twilight. But the picture of Our Lady of Grace? Cool beans. She was our “mama”. 😉

Maybe it depends on how our relationship is with our earthly mother?
You know, transforming our feelings for our earthly mother to our heaventhly Mama?
If you’re close to your mother you easily love Mama Mary and the other way around.

I don’t know, it’s just I thought…

Anyways, If Mama Mary where to pay me a visit I wouldve been honoured and the happiest person on earth <3
Needless to say, I have a very deep admiration and love for her:)

Yours in Jesus and Mary

Maybe in some cases, but mom is a really mild mannered, loving SAHM, so don’t think that was it with me. I think the idea of anything supernatural just kind of made me nervous. Some of the end of times predictions and how much had already come true were scary as a young child too (still are).

When I was young I had an aunt who was my babysitter. If I misbehaved, she would tell me Mary and the saints were crying because I was bad.

In the third grade, the nun asked us in class if we wanted to go to heaven and I loudly said “No!” Needless to say she was shocked and I had to explain that it sounded like a horrible place because everyone was miserable and crying all the time. Sister called my mother and related the story.

Needless to say, auntie’s babysitting career came to an abrupt end!

My guess is that your dad might have heard the Fatima story in which she appeared to three Shepard children to have them warn the world about the coming wars and she also gave the children a vision of hell so they could warn people that it is real and horrifying. So I could see if Fatima wasn’t fully explained to someone especially as a child, they could be terrified.

I am a cradle catholic who stopped practicing the faith at about 10 and until 24 I started To seek God again and ill tell you if it wasn’t for Mary who all she does is lead to God I wouldn’t be here. That women is the reason why I love God and Jesus doesn’t mind b/c he still listen to this women just as in Cana.
I GIIVE MYSELF TO YOUR SACRED HEART JESUS THROUGH THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY…

IMMACULATE MOTHER HELP ME TO SURRENDER MY HEART AND SOUL TO YOUR SON’S DIVINE PROVIDENCE AND TO OPEN MY HEART AND SOUL AS YOU DID YOUR WHOLE LIFE…

SHAPE ME, MOLD ME,PURIFY ME,HELP ME TO BECOME A LIVING JESUS IN MY ACTIONS,WORDS, AND DEEDS.

Definitely the case with me, or rather, it was explained, but a child can only understand things so well.

Our Blessed Mother Mary loves us as she loves Jesus. She stood at the cross in great sorrow, and in unison with His Sacrifice she suffered as well.

The evil one and his cohorts hate her because she is a creature like us, and so full of grace.

The Holy Rosary with meditations on the all the mysteries is like learning about Jesus while holding her hand…she who knew Him so well!

I’m not frightened of our Sweet Mother. What I’m scared of is “Why is she visiting me?” She doesn’t just drop in for coffee and donuts! She usually wants something!!!

:bigyikes: Mary, good to see you…

What do you want?

Mary? No.

Christ Crucified? Absolutely. We had a sick call crucifix in our living room.

I dont remember quite what I did (I was about four) when my mom sat me down.

“See Jesus on the cross?”

“Yes.”

“He died because of sin.”

“Yes, Mama.”

“Every time you sin, you’re putting another nail into his hand.”

I couldn’t pray to Jesus for years because of the guilt, unless it was a formal prayer. I prayed to God.

When I grew into apologetics, and a less…rustic theology… you’d better believe misinformation like that is damaging and I won’t expose my kids or converts to it.
