Terrifying high organ tune at Requiem Mass - Anyone know it?

Really? I found it modernistic and mediocre. It actually sounded to me like a fairly talented organist just improvising, which seems like a distinct possibility when you see how promptly the “piece” tapers off and wraps up at precisely the moment the priest reaches the foot of the altar.

In exchange, though, I offer you the Kyrie from Louis Vierne’s Messe Solennelle. 🙂
 
How does one get really beautiful music sung sang at one’s requiem mass. Is it a matter of leaving enough money for the parish to get a Professional choir together who can sing a beautiful Requiem like the Vierne?

By the way, I think the mass the OP linked to is beautiful also.
 
What is with the black vestments? I thought the Roman Catholic funeral Mass now used white vestments??

The organ solo in question sounded very dissonant. Perhaps appropriate for funerals. It fits with peoples emotional state.

I have only seen black vestments at the EF.

The 1970 missal always permitted black, violet or white vestments for Masses of the Dead. While in practice most parishes have used white, the other two have always been options. One is starting to see black occasionally in the OF.

However, the EF Requiem has always been black. My color curiosity here concerns the pall. Anyone?

It is never an easy task these days. If one does not have a parish or other nearby schola to sing at a funeral Mass, paid professionals would likely be needed. Then the problem becomes the logistics of getting them all together, first for a practice session and then for the actual funeral at the correct time and place. SInce funerals generally take place within a few days, this can be the tricky part.

As a practical measure, it is always a good to mention these items in an addendum to one’s will. My attorney asked for all such details, to cover one more base. Still doesn’t guarantee it for many people, but it reduces the chance that family or others will attempt to pre-empt the wishes of the deceased.

The priest can wear white, black and violet for funerals. I have been seen all three colors worn at funerals.
 
The normative color for the Latin Rite in Masses for the Dead is still black, as it always has been.

However, our USCCB (and the bishops’ conference of whichever other countries) requested an indult, and they got it, which permits American priests and bishops to wear white or violet in Masses for the Dead.

I think this is rather inappropriate. White is historically a mourning color in Asian countries, but not in Western ones. I know the idea was to symbolize the “rebirth” of the dead person in heaven, but it just still defeats the mourning atmosphere, in my opinion. Violet is more appropriate, I guess, but I still think black is the most appropriate color.

And I agree with whoever said that the introit sounds modern. It does. But that doesn’t make it less terrifying.
 
Black was never forbidden. If the vestments are black, then so is the Pall. If white, then white Pall.

I really love the Black vestments. This Nov. 2 we will be attending a Requeim High Mass at North American Martyr’s in Seattle.

Interesting, not that I am surprised. It was pretty common back then to “steal” and use motifs and tunes, whether from folk songs or from other composers. I don’t think they asked either. 😛

hmm, have you heard Hayden’s Missa Brevis with organ? It actually is scored for a string Quartet and Organ. Kryie. The choral parts were easy enough for my high school choir to sing.

Even if we had them I don’t know many priests who’d opt to wear black at funerals.

It’s interesting to note that the way the GIRM is worded, violet “may always be worn” at Masses for the Dead, while black may be used “where it is the practice”.

White is an adaptation requested by bishops’ conferences as permitted by the GIRM. The Canadian adaptations to the GIRM also allow for white vestments for funerals as do those for England and Wales, Australia and New Zealand.

Do you have the JAV recording of that Mass at Saint-Sulpice with Daniel Roth at the organ? I bought it last year and have yet to listen to it.

The Mozart Requiem is my favorite although I also like the Verdi as a performance piece. The Mozart Requiem sounds so much different than his usual brilliance.

Unfortunately for me, I’ve seen Amadeus so many times that it somewhat spoils the liturgical experience of the Requiem. Too much spice, too many notes!

As far as purely choral polyphonic Requiems go, though, I’d have to say my favorite is by (G.F.) Anerio, who hew very close to the Gregorian forms. You can hear the introit and kyrie here, but then make sure you go hyperion-records.co.uk/al.asp?al=CDH55213 here and click the musical notes to the left of “Movement 3: Sequentia”; you should get a little player at the bottom left, and listen to how he works the beginning of the Dies Irae.
