In the Magnificat misselette, the Saturday reading was a letter of St Paul to the Romans (16:3-9, 16, 22-27.

In second paragraph it say “I, Tertius, the writer of this letter”…

Who is Tertius?

One of The Seventy (Luke 10), eventually became bishop of Iconium.

Some people think Tertius and Silas were the same person because the name Silas is the Greek version of the Hebrew name Shalish which literally means “third”, which is also the literal meaning of the Latin name Tertius.

Tertius was an amanuensis to Paul. Paul spoke the words of the letter and Tertius actually put pen to paper - he physically wrote the letter while Paul dictated it. Several of Paul’s letters have a short salutation at the end of them written by Paul himself, which he then signs - but of the Great Epistles, Paul used a scribe.

My husband and I thought that Tertius was the scribe but this is the first time either of us remember reading the name of Tertius in Paul’s letters.
