Texts for Votive Masses?

Hi

i know it hardly ever happens, but a priest may celebrate a Mass of any Saint as a Votive Mass, even one whom is not included in the General Roman Calendar.

In the event that a priest elects to do this, how would readings be selected? And what about Opening and Concluding prayers?

In the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal, it has in n. 355:
“On the weekdays in Ordinary Time, it is possible to choose either a weekday Mass, or the Mass of an optional memorial which happens to occur on that day, or the Mass of any Saint listed in the Martyrology for that day, or a Mass for Various Needs, or a Votive Mass.”

It does not make sense to say “the Mass of any Saint listed in the Martyrology for that day” if a Votive Mass allows the celebration of any saint.

My understanding of a Votive Mass, therefore, is it is one of the Masses given in the Roman Missal, in the section “Votive Masses”. Individual Saints with such a Votive Mass are: Blessed Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, Joseph, Peter and Paul.

The Roman Missal provides the texts that go with those Masses. The Lectionary provides the readings that go with them.

But then why does the missal say before the Proper of Saints that the Masses given in the Proper can be said as Votives unless there is provided a special Votive Mass or unless they are of the mysteries in the life of the Lord or the BVM?

Can’t it be said in light of the previous clarification given on the former version of this rubric in the GIRM, that the reason the Masses of saints given in the martyrology are mentioned separately is to show a preference if the Mass of a saint is said? That dubium interpreted the then no. 323 (now no. 375) as allowing the Votive Mass of any saint on a weekday.

Votive Masses of the mysteries of the Lord or in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary or of the Angels or of any given Saint or of all the Saints may be said for the sake of the faithful’s devotion on weekdays in Ordinary Time, even if an optional memorial occurs.

The Dubium:

On weekdays in Ordinary Time may the Mass of any saint one chooses be celebrated?

Yes. The GIRM no. 316c says: “On the weekdays in Ordinary Time, the priest may choose the weekday Mass, the Mass of an optional memorial, the Mass of a saint inscribed in the martyrology for that day, a Mass for various needs and occasions, or a votive Mass.” The votive Masses listed are those “of the mysteries of the Lord or in honor of Mary or of a particular saint or of all the saints” (GIRM no. 329c).

Even though no. 316c gives a certain precedence to those saints mentioned in the martyrology for the day, no. 329c at the end allows, as an option in favor of the faithful’s devotion, a votive Mass of any saint or all the saints.
