Ok - for us Protestants who are curious - can you recommend a good Catholic Bible translation?

.
RSV is approved by Catholic Chruch. RSV is also a Protestant favorite. I grew up on it as Protestant … and it still serves me well from Catholic perspective.

I’ve also got a NRSV Catholic Bible with Deuterocanonicals … which I like alot.

Thanks! I have a NRSV as well - I spend some time in the Episcopal Church (didn’t realize that is an approved Catholic translation as well - so I’m all set). 🙂

Yes, the Catholic Bible has 73 books and the Protestant has 66 books. Which is interesting from a numerological perspective ;). 7 is the number of perfection or completeness, 3 the number of the Trinity, and 6 the number of man, of incompleteness, and even of the Beast.

The OP covered the differences in books between the two Bibles.
Thanks Lief and rpp 🙂

I just want to make sure I’m comprehended correctly. 🙂
The 7 additional books are…
  • Tobit
  • Judith
  • Wisdom
  • Sirach, also called Ben Sira or Ecclesiasticus
  • Baruch, including the Letter of Jeremiah
  • 1 Maccabees
  • 2 Maccabees
Right?

Correct.

And there also are significant portions of Daniel and Esther in the Catholic Bibles- several chapters and stories -that the Protestant Bibles leave out.
