Both the LXX and Vulgate vary from the Masoretic. But both the LXX and the Vulgate were produced using Hebrew sources that predate the Masoretic text. Has anyone published any details on the similarty in the variation that the LXX and Vulgate make relative to the Masoretic ?

In other words, does it turn out that the LXX and Vulgate vary in substantially the same way in the Old Testament from the later Masoretic ?

If there’s anything the Dead Sea Scrolls has taught us, it’s that the text of the Old Testament books (like that of the New Testament) originally existed in different versions before one text became the standard out of many. So it’s really a case of different ancestral texts: the Masoretic OT is descended from one version, the Septuagint from another text, and the Samaritan Torah from yet another variant, and so on.
