He brutally murdered twelve-year-old Maria Goretti, stabbing her 14 times, who forgave him before she died and who said she wanted him to be with her in heaven. In prison she saved him, he said, when he had a vision of her, forgiving him. One of his surprising acts after he was released from long years in prison was to go to Christmas mass at her parish church, acknowledging his sin and asking God and the community for forgiveness. Then he joined a religious order the rest of his life, repentant.

What that story does not elaborate on, is when Maria was handing him those lilies while he was in prison and seeing the vision of her, each lily burst into flames and burned to ashes. It was then that Alessandro recalled one of the last things Maria said to him when he was trying to assault her: “No Alessandro, it’s a sin. You will go to Hell!”

Alessandro put two and two together and realized that the burning lilies were meant to symbolize the fires of Hell and that Maria was trying to warn him about his fate if he didn’t repent for his sin.

Which he did, thankfully.
 
St. Maria Goretti is the one of the saints that moves me. She stirs something inside of me. Anything seems truly possible in her case. The saints that prove that anything is humanly possible stir a feeling in me. What is our excuse for not forgiving offenses?
