Everyone is questioning my understanding… I am going to tell you what I understand the Church’s beliefs to be about… If I am wrong please correct me…
  1. Jesus founded the Catholic Church with the apostles. Peter was the first Pope… There was no other Christian Church before…Catholics put the bible to together… Luther broke of created Protestanism… took out 5-7 books(Book of Wisdom, Sirach, Maccabees 1&2, Judith…etch). So because the Church is the oldest Church and was not found by “man” it is the truest.
  2. No women are priest because the Apostles were men. Therefore nothing can change, because it is all about the gender of the Apostles and Jesus(of course). There is no birth control because contraception is against the natural purpose of intercourse… Everything is about the unborn(don’t prevent them and no abortion). Use NFP to monitor ovulation… so a pregnancy can be avoided. If a pregnancy occurs because of this method…Catholic outlook is oh well, you are married and the purpose of a marriage is to create children…
  3. Mary is venerated as the Saints of all Saints. She is not worshipped. Praying to and with Saints is not worshipping them because they act as the agents of God.
  4. In order for a sin to be forgiven. A person in the Catholic Church has to have a contrite heart(be sorry for sins), Go to confession, and then be allowed to eat bread and drink wine(which the bread and wine is Jesus and therefore a person is eating Jesus), so that their soul can be nourished. The bread and wine become Jesus after the priest states magic words(know to Catholics as transbutation). Priest and deacons are mentioned in the New Testament so their power and Authority are justified to do all these things.
  5. There are sacraments to the faith. Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Last Rites(So far from what I read).
  6. The sinces are grave, venial, and mortal(mortal sins need to be confessed, because they are so serious a priest is needed to help the confessing person be forgived)
  7. There are prayers for every occasion. Eating, Sleeping, and everything else.
  8. Mass is for worshipping God(who cares if it is boring we are there for HIM) So the focus on fellowship isn’t there because of this(in some cases)
  9. In addition to the bible. Cannon laws are declared by the Pope(who is the infallible representative of Jesus). He is human and has weakness, but he is never wrong about the Catholic Law. If any of these laws are not followed, then a Catholic must confess it, because it is a sin(In addition to what is in the bible).
Am I getting it? or are there any other things that I am missing?
I am not trying to be difficult. Also my mother is somewhat of a feminist. Her views Cathocism may not be the best.

I don’t think this was an ugly thread Carjack1. I hope you continue to ask questions.

Another note: I read somewhere recently-sorry I can’t remember where-that even tho priest abuse happened, the CC still has the lowest incidence of abuse. DEFINITELY not saying it’s OK, just found that tidbit interesting. Esp since the priest I was rsised thru the Sacraments with was “hidden” quietly in our parish! I didn’t learn the facts until I was 18 or so, but I always thought he was creepey.(I figured out on my own he was an alcoholic.) How’s that for irony. Also, the associate pastor at the nondenom church I went to was accused of abuse. I guess I am trying to say people are human, abuse happens everywhere, and I wish I will someday not hear the priest scandals as a reason for leaving the CC.

And I still think Open to Life does not mean Haveas many babies as you are able.
Anyway, I hope you continue to learn about your faith-sounds like your family might be a place to go to- and ask questions. And maybe I’ll see you in church one day. Not playing in the Holy water because we’re older & know better! (Yeah, I got in big trouble for that one.)
I would imagine. lol.

Carjack1:
The fact that you disagree doesn’t change the truth, just establishes what side of the truth you are on. Scriptures plainly tells us that the Church was built by Christ upon the rock, being St. Peter. Sacred Scripture also tells us that the Church is the pillar and ground of the truth (not the Bible, although it is the Word of God the Bible doesn’t teach it’s own truth). Please see 1 Tim 3:15 “thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” The Bible was written by members of the early Church, for members of the Church, and the books of the Bible were chosen by that same Church. Just as the followers of Christ came to be known as Christian, the worldwide Church came to be known as Catholic (for the universal or worldwide). The Catholic Church existed before the Bible, and the Bible was given to us through the Catholic Church, and is the infallible teaching institution (pillar and ground of truth) for God’s Word including the Scriptures. God is with His Church, and protects His one true Church. No other church is an infallible teacher. What other “Bible only” churches teach is their interpretation of the Scriptures, which differ widely. The Holy Spirit does not lead people in multiple and conflicting interpretations. Poor interpretations of the Scriptures lead to ignorance of Christ. Since the Catholic Church is an infallible teacher, one will be closest to Christ in His Church in which He is also present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Attending a man-made Church which teaches error is not a direction the Holy Spirit would lead one. This ignorance of Christ also leads us further from Christ. As St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians 2:19 tells us “So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God…” Paul had told us that the house of the living God is the Church. The Church in Scriptures is the one Church built by Christ, for his worldwide family.

God Bless you in your struggles and my He show you the way to His Home.

Have been following this thread, but have not read all of the posts,
if I repeat, sorry!
A couple of thoughts on the abuse scandal, especially on the
cover up. My brother is a phychiatrist (sp?) and in fact has
counseled priests for a diocese, not necessarily for abuse.
The training that they received especially when the majority of
the abuses took place led EVERYONE to believe that these
people (abusers) could be rehabilitated and would not repeat
the offenses. That has since been found in error, but some of
the bishops sincerely believed it. Others were deliberately
covering up, yes.
Some of the charges were false and sadly we lost more than
a few innocent priests. Some were dead when they were cleared,
others lost years of ministry and some never recovered from the
emotional and physical strain.

We as Catholics are not perfect or sinless, but struggling to
follow as best we can what Jesus teaches us.

On a another point, as a mother of five, the points you mention on
birth control are understandable. I did not understand the teaching
either, but slowly I understood the wisdom of it. A good book that
really cemented it for me was Kimberly Hahn’s “Life-Giving Love”
And on the Mass, check out some free tapes/cds from
Catholicity.com
Hoping some of this will help you on your journey.

I guess I am ignorant because I am in a man made church:rolleyes: and far from Christ. lol. whew. I wish people would stop saying God Bless me while insulting my beliefs.

It will take sometime to answer all those points you posted. Some points are right, others are not. When time permits, I find good article for you to read for each of those 9 things you posted.

  • When reading through those 9 points, you actually have more than 9. It is a whole lot. 🙂
This is why you should reconsider joining the RCIA to find out what the Church actually says about what you posted - No one is going to make you going back to Catholic; it is your decision, but at least you should give yourself a chance to learn what Catholics actually believe.

…which side of truth you are on. “There is more than one side?”

I guess I am ignorant because I am in a man made church:rolleyes: and far from Christ. lol. whew. I wish people would stop saying God Bless me while insulting my beliefs.
The sides were obviously on the correct side (in support of), or on the wrong side (in opposisition to or outside the truth). If you really want a discussion on truth, you must also be willing to accept the truth.

You take this as an insult on your own, but not from my intention. What I stated was simply a fact, which is also an admonition, or warning to avoid pitfalls if you truly want to come to Christ fully and completely. If you were walking toward a hole, I would urge you to step to one side to keep from falling into it. It’s the same here.

There is a Church that God made, and thousands that man made. It’s my belief that anyone who really seeks Christ will find Him. His home is the Church that He made. I believe He wants His family to be in His Home that He built.

The truth is not something, the Truth is Someone…, Jesus the Christ.

Explore the faith and if you have questions, we will be here.
I think we have to be careful when “exploring the faith” because some things cannot be explained.
Faith is a gift, when you start rationilizing everything your faith begins to turn into a “scince thing” and that is not what God wants. He could have made every aspect of our Faith absolutely rational but He want us to be free to love Him.

How about if the mind is scientific?

If the mind is scientific, even if God is scientific, science wouldn’t make you love. God doesn’t care if science can explain His existence, HE WANTS LOVE. He gives Himself to you, He wants you to give yourself to Him so He can give you everything. You cannot love what you don’t know. If you want to understand the Truth, you must try to love Him first, to know Jesus through the Gospels, then try to understand what you believe.

I am trained in the applied sciences. Every bit of science I see tells me that there is a Creator. Statistically, forensically, in order and functioning… Even by common sense as well, a creation demands that there is a Creator. I also know that without faith, it is impossible to please God. God didn’t overwhelm us so that we were forced to believe in Him. He has given us free will and the ability to seek Him. Everyone who seeks God, will find Him. There is no one who truly seeks Him who does not find. It’s a sad fact that many who say they seek God, really are seeking their own desires above Him. If we have everything but God, we have nothing. We must seek Him above all, and then we will find Him and have everything we need, which is to have a loving relationship with our true and real Father, our brother the King, our Mother (the Queen Mother who sits at the right hand of the King), our family the saints, etc.

:clapping: I am so glad you are strong in your faith

Everyone who seeks God, will find Him.
I completely agree with that.
Dear Carjack1: if you decided not to be a part of the Catholic Faith, go that way. Relax. Sometimes Faith is a slow process. There are moments when one can question things that in time they seem very obvious and viceversa. Faith is not science, it is a difficult path full of rocks that not always seems so rational and understandable, but if you truly look for Truth, keep on looking, God will not leave always blind.

:clapping: I am so glad you are strong in your faith
My statements were obviously a testimony for anyone claiming difficulty in reconciling a scientific mind with faith in God, for those genuinely seeking Him. It is by the Grace of God that I can do anything good. Please thank Him with me. If you are sincere in seeking God, you will heed the good advice and love given to you on this board. Your actions will define whether you really seek God, or seek something else.

Again thanks everyone and I wish you luck in your endeavors.
I wish you the best of fortune, acceptance of wise counsel, and hope you commit to not only Christ, but being in His family in His one home that He built. Catholics don’t live on luck, but on the Grace of God and on every Word that comes from the mouth of God. Christ has invited us, His family to live in His House…, please send your your RSVP to Him… He will keep a light on for you.

I am going to (if my work schedule permits me so) to take RCIA classes next month. I am going to try to force myself to believe in all the doctrines. So that I can be obedient. Even though I get the hives and nervousness when I go to Mass because I feel creeped out. I can go through the motions mechanically, until my heart catches on. Then I am going to smile at other Christians and tell them that their faith is based on a lie and for selfish reasons they are not in the Catholic Church and then I am going to tell them that the CC is founded by Jesus and theirs is man made. Then when they tell me why they don’t agree with the Church, I will call them anti-Catholic. Then I can be on the same boat with all the other self-righteous Catholics.

Don’t know what to make of your last post. You didn’t comment
on the book I suggested you read. If you can’t buy it, go to
Barnes and Noble and read a chapter at a time. Kimberly did
a lot of research on one of the teachings you’re having a prob-
lem with and it might be helpful to you no matter what you de-
cide.
Also look up convert stories. There’s hundreds of them on
catholicconvert.com there’ll be a sidebar that says “conversions”
there are also many on chn.org and books Suprised by Truth
by Patrick Madrid (there’s three at least, Surprised by Truth and
then Surprised by Truth 2 and 3)
Some have been where you are, some even further back, I’m
sure you’ll be able to relate without feeling threatened.
None of us here that I can tell are “self rightous”, but we are
sure of the Truth and maybe it sounds that way. As for me,
I just wish you could share in the joy that we feel. If we are
too reserved for you at Mass, find another where they are more
outwardly joyous. there are many.
Maybe you weren’t being sarcastic, but it sounded that way and
one thing I do know it God wants you willingly not forced.

Carjack,

I realize you are being facetious when you talk about joining RCIA. But, RCIA is a good place to bring up your issues (assuming you are in a good parish, not all of them have good programs). If you are not ready, it may not be time. The important thing is to be close to the Lord in prayer and earnest in your surrender to His Will for you.

Posters on this thread can be preachy and insensitive. Don’t take it personally. You are doing just fine. Go where the Spirit leads you, and forget “human respect”, as St. Francis deSales put it. Be willing to follow the Lord into the jungles, if need be. Then, you will be on the right track. :getholy:
