I want to thank everyone at CAF that was able to answer my questions and respond to my situations in a charitable manner. šŸ™‚ After much investigation and research I have concluded that I will not be Catholic. I do respect your traditions and have learned a lot about what Catholics believe. I wish everyone luck in all their endeavors.

God Bless You,

Carjack

First of all, the traditions are not ā€œoursā€ but they have been handed down by the apostles.

You said you have learnt a lot about what Catholics believe, yet you don’t want to be a Catholic. So you believe that Catholic beliefs are false, isn’t it?

I was not trying to start a debate. I just do not believe in everything Catholics believe, but it was nice learning about why you guys believe what you do.

You are very welcome, carjack.

I was just wondering why your profile states that you are unsured about your religion but your signature says ā€œI know I am Christianā€ - My question for you is how do you know you are a Christian?

Thanks!

I was unsure if I was staying non-denominational or if I was going to join the Catholic Church(The Catholic Church is a part of my Culture(Puerto Rican))or another denomination. I have been Americanized and have no ties to my culture. I might take Spanish classes for that. I know that I am Christian because I believe that Christ died for our sins. That he is part of the Trinity. I try my best to follow Him and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Thanks, carjack. Talking about culture, every country has tradition; once, we do not embrace the tradition, we feel as if we are foreinger to our own country. Talking about religion, everyone one has tradition, and Catholic has Tradition (capital T) passed down 2000 years.

Learning the Catholic Tradition takes time and patience. I pray that you continue letting the Holy Spirit to guide you and learn one thing at a time about the CAtholic Tradition.

You are always welcome here.

I wish you godspeed in your spiritual journey and when you hear some other denomination start bashing the Catholic Church, you will remember what you learned here.

I hope you come back (or stay) and join in some threads.

Peace be with you,

Thank you. I don’t agree with a lot of the doctrines. If I am going to be part of a religion, I don’t want to be a Cafeteria Catholic. I understand that the traditional stuff practiced in the Catholic faith are important to them and I respect that. The Holy Spirit is leading me away from the Church. Me and the Catholic faith are about as compatable as :banghead: . I am glad the Holy Spirit lead you to your Catholic faith.

I never did hear another denomination bashing the Catholic faith, but once. When I heard this I didn’t return to bible study the following week. I do not believe in bashing other Christian Faiths. I do see it is a 2-way Street. Catholics and non-Catholics bashing each other. Being part of a organized religion makes me feel :hypno:.

I don’t think the Holy Spirit will lead one away from the Church and the other to the Church. That is something you should think more carefully.

I am sorry but the Catholic Church makes me miserable and for the sake of my sanity I know the HS is leading me away. Since I was in first grade, the CC and have been incompatable and always will be. I believe the HS works outside of the CC as well.

Have you talked with someone about this or discussed on this forum about how the Church makes you miserable? would you care to share what this is all about because I cannot really see how? … or is it some Doctrines that give you problem?

Thanks!

The only part of your statement that I disagree with is the part I bolded. The Catholic Church may very well make you feel miserable and it is for this reason the Holy Spirit might be prompting you in another direction to help better prepare you for what the Catholic Church believes and teaches. The Holy Spirit works outside the physical walls of the Catholic Church - that’s even Catholic teaching. But when you say that you and the Catholic Church will always be incompatible, I pray that is not the case. I hope you will be open to the Catholic Church some day. I hope you are open to that possibility somewhere down the road.

God bless you in your journey! šŸ™‚

We’ll leave the light on for you.

A decision FOR Catholicism takes a lot of commitment and a certain serenity of heart. If you are the person I believe I remember you to be, I think even if you walked up to the local rectory, told them your story, and stated that you absolutely, definitely wanted to become Catholic right now, while they would welcome you with open arms, they would likely ask you to chill for a while until you sorted out some of the turmoil in your life.

We’ll be here if you change your mind.

Some of the doctrines give me a problem. I have bad memories from Catholic school about the extreme strictness of the Catholic Church(I am a free spirit). Memories are so bad that I cry when I go in a Catholic Church. I don’t feel at home there. I never will. I tried to put my uneasy feelings away by going to Mass, reading Cathecism books, and talking to people here. The CC will not ever be for me.

I’ve been to Catholic religious education in my country. yes, the Sisters were very strict but they were doing me a favor. The public school where I attended in Vietname allowed teachers to whip me when I made mistakes; but this makes me a better person. However, they had never done anything that really damage my self-esteem or hurt me over long period of time.

If something you could not forgive when you were attending Catholic school, you need to talk with somebody who could guide you to forgiveness.

What are the strict rules at the Catholic school that you most had problem with?

Thanks!

C.S. Lewis wrote a book Mere Christianity.

How many assertions, in the Nicene Creed, would all Christians share?

We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

All that the Nicene Creed states - with the exception of the lines in blue and red, and green - are shared by all Christians, are they not?

The filioque [proceeds from the Father *and the Son] constitues a highly understandable major difficulty, for Orthodoxy, while some Christian churches reject the need for water baptism.
How this latter position is arrived at, I cannot fathom - given the unambiguous words of Jesus:

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit…[Matt. 28]

What I so often find of interest, is reasoning that concludes:

Another - knowing the complete explanation, of a given teaching - will end up accepting same.

If this was, indeed, a matter of ā€˜necessity’ [in the realm of the canons of logic] -
the world would be rushing to the Church door, overwhelmed by the logic of it all. :coffeeread:

The list is too long. I was not free to be myself in Catholic School. I forgave the schools a long time ago. I just do not feel the joy that a person is suppose to feel when they attend Mass. I feel miserable when I am there.

well, could you give an example of a restriction from the Catholic school where you attended that made you feel miserable and want to cry when you attend mass?

You are looking for feeling as an indicator of your faith. What you need to look for is the understanding.
