But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. 1 Corinthians 5

I am home visiting my Catholic family. How do I reconcile this?

And your point is?

Please clarify what the problem is with your family that would make associating with them a problem for you.

Well, in a nutshell, this literally means not to eat with sinners. If everyone followed this verbatim, everyone would be eating alone at thanksgiving.

Better to understand it to mean-don’t let their behavior rub off on you and cause you to sin.😉

I’m don’t think that this scripture refers to your own family as a whole.

I think that the intent is to protect and keep pure the name and image of Christ to those outside the faith. If a believing/professing Christian is openly engaged in sin, then we are not to associate with them, not only because we may be tempted to join them, but because the name of Christ would be sullied. By our association with them, it might be perceived that we are condoning their behavior.

But, everyone would expect us to associate with our own family. Otherwise, outsiders might question our love for God, because they might think we cannot even get along with our own family.

Just my opinion without knowing all the facts

Christ ate with sinners. Dinner is an opportunity for evangelism!

:rotfl:

Good one!

I guess it depends, like anything else on all the circumstances. Normally, we believe it’s okay to eat with family, but there are always exceptions and extreme cases.

I think this was meant for the new Christian communities. In those times I think these communities were popping up everywhere . Just like it is today, people like to be a part of any new trend. These people were seeing the new trend wanted to be a part of it but they had not truly converted and where still living in mortal sin. They were just pretending to be Christians. So the truly converted were directed not to associate with them in a communal way.
