Has anyone noticed that some things just smell Catholic? I know it sounds weird, but even the devotional books I’ve gotten from the Cathedral, and the information packages I’ve recieved from differant religious orders have this smell that reminds me of church. I can tell when something is Catholic because it has that certain, refreshing smell.

Strange huh?

The smell of incense! And I know this may sound strange but a Catholic church just seems to smell a certain way.

Yes! I could be blindfolded and taken to church and as soon as I walked in, I’d know where I was. I love the smell of a Catholic church. In fact, I just told my husband, who’s not Catholic that very thing a couple weeks ago.🙂

I put frankincense and myrrh oil together in my oilburner and it’s close 😉

Interesting topic. Most books I have just smell like dusty, old books. Maybe I’m missing something?

By the way, can people smell particularly Catholic?

Catholic schools smell different than other schools, too, and it is still true today at my grandkids’ 3 schools and our parish school. They must sell this stuff in a spray can.

The smell of old wood, traces of incense and smoke for extinguished candles, wax, stone, ink, dust, and countless people. Ah, the heavenly Catholic smell 😉

I used to think so too, until I visited my grandparents’-in-law Methodist retirement complex and my first thought was “This smells like my Catholic high school!” 😃 I still look forward to visits there!

I know what you mean! All Catholic grade and high schools smell alike. And of course, the churches are the same way.

Mmmm… the sweet smell of TRUTH.

My daughter is seven years old. Her baptismal gown still smells of the chrism and the oil. He put it on kinda thick,

The wonderful scent of BEESWAX and that honey odor. Also, a few years back, my mother showed me a book she’d bought on the Rosary by Kevin Orlin Johnson and she insisted it smelled like roses. It did and it still does. :hmmm:

Every time I walk in my local church, I feel the special smell.
I believe the Catholic smell is the fragrance of God. Keep in mind all Catholic Churches have the Real Presence, that’s why there is the smell of God’s fragrance. 👍

I will never forget a comment I read. It was a book review on Amazon.com for the St. Jerome Bible Commentary. One reviewer was apparently a Protestant and wanted to warn others that this was a Catholic commentary.

The reviewer wrote: “It is so Catholic you can almost smell the incense.” I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

I am also a convert. As my conversion was sudden, I knew I needed to be a Catholic before I ever talked to a Catholic or went to a Catholic church.

That very first time I entered a Catholic church, it was one of the happiest and most spirit-filled days of my life. I was immediately hit with that wonderful aroma. I think it was the combination of old incense and beeswax candles. I love it. Every time I encounter that beautiful scent, I recall that first day I entered a church and how I felt.

Not long ago, it hit me at a weak moment as I entered my parish, it was Easter Morning. The previous evening, Easter Vigil, much incense was used and many candles were burned so the aroma was particularly strong. The smell induced me to recall the events surrounding the terrible and wonderful day God came to me. And then the joy of the miracle of my supernatural and instantaneous conversion from atheism. It was a moment of deep connection with God. I had this strong image of the incense as all the prayers being offered to God. It was almost like the smoke was made of tiny letters and word, rising to God.

Oh God, thank for the gift of faith. Help me, Lord, to be more charitable and more faithful to You. Amen.

Man, we have to switch parishes. Our parish just smells like generic industrial cleaner. At least we’re clean!

The smell of roses is completely Catholic…Mother Mary! :yup:
