I figured that I needed to post this after my supervisor at the hospital where I volunteered got pissed at me because I did not tell her ahead of time that I could not go into an elevator alone. Since it’s a volunteer job, I’m still giving her free labor and it is not likely that I’ll get fired if I can accomplish most tasks and others can take over when I cannot. But, it made me realize that this can pose as an obstacle for my dream of becoming a doctor. As a kid, I was terrified of being alone in any enclosed, small, windowless space and a lot of unrelated things. While I got over a lot of those fears as I matured. For instance, I can use the restroom on a air plane now. However, the fear of elevators has stuck with me. I’m okay with glass elevators, but, the ones at work are not see-through. Anyway, pray that I get over this and that I can redeem myself.

I pray that you will seek the help needed to overcome this fear that could cripple the future as a doctor, and to ensure that the supervisor knows as soon as possible that the right steps are being taken to overcome the fear so this doesn’t become a matter of record that affects future employment.

redbetta, time to make good friends with your Guardian Angel who accompanies you everywhere. 🙂
With the Lord you are never alone. Picture Him present, however I pray you will seek help, and find techniques that will help you overcome the phobia.
God bless you

Prayer of St. Dymphna

Lord, our God, you graciously chose St. Dymphna as patroness of those afflicted with mental, emotional, and nervous disorders. She is thus an inspiration and a symbol of charity to the thousands who ask her intercession.

Please grant, Lord, through the prayers of this pure youthful martyr, relief and consolation for redbetta’s elevator phobia.

We beg you, Lord, to hear the prayers of St. Dymphna on our behalf. Grant all those for whom we pray patience in their sufferings and resignation to your divine will. Please fill them with hope, and grant them the relief and cure they so desire.

We ask this through Christ our Lord, who suffered agony in the garden. Amen.

:signofcross:

Praying for you. Over here, a lot of people have a fear of escalators: walk into a crowded mall and it’s a good bet you’ll find at least one jammed by such an unfortunate soul. Praying for them as well. 🙂

It takes strength to admit something like this; it’s that you’ve done this and are seeking help. You’re in my prayers.

I’m also afraid of elevators. I always take the stairs if it’s an option. I don’t really consider it a phobia, because I’ve actually been trapped in an elevator on three different occasions and it’s flippin inconvenient and stressful. Once, I had to climb out when the thing was in between floors and the doors almost closed on me! Another time the elevator got stuck between floors and the doors opened up to a brick wall! The last time, which was actually the first chronologically, I was just stuck for a long time and it made me to late to a choir concert. As I write this, it occurs to me that this is probably not going to help you much, so I’ll just pray for you to overcome this issue. If you can get to the point that you can use an elevator when it’s really unreasonable to avoid one, then you’ll probably be fine. I doubt using the stairs will be too much of a hindrance to your career goals.

Praying for you, my Red. Hope you round some kind of corner on this.

You have my heartfelt sympathies and certainly also my prayers. If you are serious about overcoming this particular phobia, exposure therapy has a very high success rate. Find a therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders with experience with exposure therapy treatment of phobias. Don’t be afraid to go to another therapist if you’re not comfortable with s particular person. Call around, ask questions, search and read up on potential therapists online. You CAN overcome this! It takes focused, dedicated, and persistent work.

I’m sorry about the response you received from your supervisor. I would never respond with such a lack of empathy toward anyone with s phobia. It’s not like you decided to develop a phobia just because! Wow. That says a whole lot more about her than you.

Praying for you & wishing you well!

My middle school English teacher was widowed young because her husband fixed elevators for a living and the elevator box fell on him. Going to the elevator reminds me of that story. I know statistics say that an elevator death is highly unlikely, it’s different if you know of a case that happened nearby.

Ah. That’d pretty much do it I guess. Just say a prayer to your guardian angel before you go in one and think of something else? I don’t know. I don’t have a lot of experience with phobias like this. I just pray you’ll ride this out somehow.

Peace my Red.

St Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray

Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that anyone who fled to thy protection,

Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins,
my Mother.
To thee I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
…despise not my petition,
…but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

Original Prayer to St. Michael
:signofcross:
“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging
against the principalities and powers,
against the rulers of this world of darkness,
against the evil spirits.
Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal,
…made in His own image and likeness,
…and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.

“Fight this day the battle of the Lord,
together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the
…proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless
…to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven.
That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces
…the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels.
Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage.
Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the
…multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order
…to blot out the name of God and of His Christ,
…to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined
…for the crown of eternal glory.
This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood,
the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart,
the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity,
…and of every vice and iniquity.

“These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness
…the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb,
…and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions.
In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has
…been set up as the light of the world,
…they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety,
…with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep
…may be scattered.

“Arise then, O invincible Prince,
bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God,
…and give them the victory.
They venerate thee as their protector and patron;
…in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the
…malicious power of hell;
to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude.
Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet,
…so far conquered that he may no
…longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church.
Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High,
…so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord;
and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan,
…do thou again make him captive in the abyss,
…that he may no longer seduce the nations.
Amen.

Litany of Humility
**
:signofcross:
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.**
From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, Jesus. [Repeat after each below]
From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. [Repeat after each below]
That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world,
… others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may
…become as holy as I should…

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
by Saint Antiochus
O Holy Spirit,
most merciful Comforter:
You proceed from the Father
in a manner beyond our understanding.
Come, I beseech You,
and take up your abode in my heart.
Purify and cleanse me from all sin,
and sanctify my soul.
Cleanse it from every impurity,
water its dryness,
melt its coldness,
and save it from its sinful ways.
Make me truly humble and resigned,
that I may be pleasing to You,
and that You might abide with me forever.
Most Blessed Light,
most Amiable Light,
enlighten me.
O Rapturous Joy of Paradise,
Fount of Purest Delight,
My God, give yourself to me
and kindle in my innermost soul the fire of Your love.
My Lord, instruct, direct,
and defend me in all things.
Give me strength against all immoderate fears
and against despondency.
Bestow upon me a true faith,
a firm hope,
and a sincere and a perfect love.
Grant that I always do Your Most Gracious Will.
Amen.

Prayer for All Virtues

O Almighty and all-knowing God,
without beginning or end,
who art the giver, preserver, and rewarder of all virtue:

Grant me to stand firm on the solid foundation of faith,
be protected by the invincible shield of hope,
and be adorned by the nuptial garment of charity;

Grant me by justice to obey thee,
by prudence to resist the crafts of the Devil,
by temperance to hold to moderation,
by fortitude to bear adversity with patience;

Grant that the goods that I have I may share liberally
with those who have not,
and the good that I do not have I may seek with humility
from those who have;

Grant that I may truly recognize the guilt of the evil I have done,
and bear with equanimity the punishments I have deserved;
that I may never lust after the goods of my neighbour,
but always give thanks to thee for all thy good gifts…

Plant in me, O Lord, all thy virtues,
that in divine matters I might be devout,
in human affairs wise,
and in the proper needs of the flesh onerous to no one…

And grant that I may never rush to do things hastily,
nor balk to do things demanding,
so that I neither yearn for things too soon,
nor desert things before they are finished.
Amen.

Heavenly Father,
Creator of all and source of all goodness and love,
please look kindly upon us,
as we ask for forgiveness for not giving You thanks.
Please receive our heartfelt apology for the lack of gratitude.
Remind us at all times that You are always worthy of our thanks.

Thank You for those things You so generously give us

Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please grant us the grace of having

Please Lord, grant us the grace of not forgetting that we can thank You

Thank You, Lord.
