That I might find a spiritual director, but for the right reasons

I am trying to progress in conversion, but I feel like I need a spiritual director because I don’t trust my own perception of spiritual reality (I’ve been led on a ot of wild goose chases). I tend to swing from lukewarmness to ascetic mania (following impressions I think are from the Holy Spirit). Just recently, I started to experience the fear of God after being reminded on the early church fathers and the fewness of the saved, so I don’t want to slip back into a lukewarm and selfish existence, but yesterday I feel like I lost the consolation of God’s direction after I broke a fast when I wanted to instead of when God wanted me to (even though I fulfilled my resolution I sensed no peace on breaking the fast and thought God wanted me to prolonged it for the entire day). Now I feel dryness and don’t have the same fear or clarity that I had yesterday. Because of the subjective nature of all this, I wanted to see if I could find a spiritual director who could help me. Something that torments me is that if the number of the saved are few according to the early church, then I keep wondering who I could trust. I need God’s help but I really have difficulty with trusting Him, since I don’t know how to discern spirits.
