2 Samuel 12 The Lord sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”
5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!
I’ve just finished a program at my parish called “That Man Is You.” paradisusdei.org/tmiy/

It’s based on the premise that men today have not really been taught what it means to be a Catholic man. And it’s a prophetic challenge to men to take authentic Christian leadership in their homes, parishes and work-lives.

The program lasts 26 weeks, and begins at 5:45am (that’s 5: 45 in the morning!).

Each meeting starts with breakfast and a prayer.
Each week a has a theme which is explained in a video.
After each video there is a small group session where the men discuss 3 questions posed in the video.

In our parish 107 men signed up, and there were an average of 60+ men at each meeting.

I’ve got to say it was a great faith and community building project and I’m going to miss my early morning weekly meeting.

We have the second series in Fall and I’m definitely going to sign up.

Has anyone else experienced this program?

What was it like for you?

During this 26 weeks I have personally:
  • started praying the evening divine office with my wife
  • reading scripture to my children every day
  • attending more weekday masses
  • 1 hour of adoration before Our Blessed Lord each week
  • gone to confession every 2 weeks
  • applied to become a Deacon with the Diocese
  • quit my previous company and started working on my own (I didn’t like the ethics - it’s been very tough financially but we are surviving by the skin of our teeth)
I found the challenge to be deeply satisfying to me, and I have made major changes in my spiritual and family life.

I have never heard of this program.

However, based on what you described of the program and the changes that came about as a result of you attending the program, it sounds heavenly!

Do they offer a similar program for women?

:clapping::clapping::dancing::extrahappy:

I have prayed that my husband would attend “That Man is You.” Of course, so far…

:nope:

But I am glad that you got such great results! What wonderful numbers of participants! I have heard only good things about this program. (I think it began in my city.)

TriumphGuy, I’m very glad for you! But I still don’t understand what it would mean to be a Catholic man. Please explain a couple things you learned?

Our parish offers this study group as well. My husband went a few times, just wasn’t his cup of tea,he’s 64,so not as enthused about it:shrug:However,my brother in the Seattle area belongs in his parish,he really enjoys it,he is 52 and is a very spiritual man and this has really enhanced that aspect of his life:)

To be honest I didn’t learn anything earth shatteringly new, but the fact that other men were there, and were open and willing to learn and share made a difference. It’s like having other men around who were also struggling to be better men, better dads, better Catholics gave “permission” to say “Yes” to some things that I had ignored before.

The fact that there were so many men, and it was so early in the morning made it a bit more “manly,” a bit more of a challenge. The small groups helped us to open up a bit, and get to know each other.

There were young guys, single guys, middle aged guys like me, and older men too.

I’ll give more specific details in a while (gotta get kids to bed).

This is from the website
That Man is You! seeks to form men who are fully alive by harmonizing what has typically been referred to as the Three Wisdoms of the Catholic Church: knowledge (secular knowledge including medical and social science); understanding (theology including Scripture, the Magisterium and Tradition); and wisdom (contemplative or mystical knowledge found primarily in the writings of the saints).
Recognizing that modern men live in and are comfortable with a culture dominated by the findings of secular science, the program makes extensive use of medical and social science. The findings of medical science have proven invaluable in helping men understand the mystery of the human person, created male and female, while the findings of social science have proven indispensable in helping men understand the fundamental importance of marriage and the family to larger society.
Recognizing that the vast majority of men are married at some point in their adult life, the theological content of the program heavily **emphasizes the importance of the spousal union in salvation history: “Marriage has been placed at the heart of the great struggle between good and evil, between life and death, between love and all that is opposed to love” **(Pope John Paul II, October 7, 1995). As such it relies heavily upon the writings of Pope John Paul II. Special emphasis is given to his Wednesday audiences gathered together in The Theology of the Body and to his Apostolic Exhortation on the family, Familiars Consortio.
A particular strength of the program is the vision of woman presented to men. **This vision is heavily influenced by St. Maximillian Kolbe’s contemplative insights into Our Lady’s inseparable union with the Holy Spirit. **The understanding of woman provided by this vision is credited with literally transforming men and their marriages.
Recognizing that Pope John Paul II has made the “contemplation of the face of Christ with Mary,” an essential aspect of the new evangelization, the program seeks in a somewhat limited manner to introduce men to the Church’s great treasury of contemplative theology. The writings of the saints as well as those of Fr. Marie Dominique Philippe, founder of the Brothers of St. John, one of the fastest growing contemplative orders in the Church, have proven effective in providing the theological depth lacking in many men’s programs.
By harmonizing these “three wisdoms,” the program has “opened vistas” and “made the faith come alive” for men in ways that would have been impossible given a more narrow focus. Men consistently consider the content to be the greatest strength of the program.
My emphases.

I’m about to start Year 3 at my parish and I love it. It’s like a retreat every Saturday morning (6-730AM). It’s the best way to start my weekend/week by focusing on my family and Christ. Thank God for TMIY.

Now they have couples and college/teen programs as well.

I’m sorry for the late answer.

Yes, they do. ENDOW-Catholic Women Studies

ENDOW starts with reading “Letter to Women” by Saint Pope John Paul II, study of the teachings of Saint Pope JPII on the dignity of women. Then are several studies to choose from—right now, ENDOW is advertising in my parish a study on the writings St Catherine of Siena.

For the female youth—“Girl Genius”.

P.S. Welcome back, True Light! I saw you had posted on a recent thread.
