My mother, who is 77,was in hospital recently due to collapsing numerous times in the middle of the night when getting up to go to the toilet.
It’s thought that because maybe due to a BLood pressure lowering medication she was given my her General practitioner and the side effects of that medicine is that it may cause Orthostatic hypotension (strongly lowering of blood pressure upon standing) and may in turn even cause circulatory collapse which can cause a heart attack.
It also suggests that it could potentially cause Dementia due to the lack of oxygen and blood supply to the brain during the collapsing episodes (low blood pressure upon standing).

She’s off them for now and hasn’t had anymore collapsing, but she’s due to go back to the doctor this week & im concerned that he will restart her on it or something similar with the same dangers.

I am besides myself because my mum does whatever the doctor says without thought and discrimination and doesn’t use her own judgment.
She has very poor English being from Slavic background, extremely poor understanding of health and has what I would term a “country bumpkin mentality” about health matters.
For example, she thinks her having high blood pressure means she has really strong blood and she is proud-if I try to explain what it really means she tunes out and laughs like I’m “the ignorant one”.😞
She also won’t travel far to see a better doctor or one from my background/nationality that could explain things better.

I am VERY WORRIED.
She’s at risk for a stroke as she has hardened aorta, high cholesterol etc so her high blood pressure does need to be treated urgently but I want it to be done in a safe way.

Can you please pray for the doctor to only give something safe,or for us to find a safe natural alternative etc and for my mum to be receptive when I try to explain health dangers or that I can tell my dad and she will listen to him as he’s a bit more aware of health matters and I am able to reason with him a bit better and generally also for my mum and dad’s health please as they are great people?

Thankyou

My parents were that trusting of doctors, too. Many years ago I bought a large book, Worst Pills Best Pills. It classified the different prescription meds according to toxicity, especially for elderly patients. Many of those can safely and effectively be taken at half dose levels. Can’t find the book, but they have a website, unfortunately it’s through paid subscription but I believe very worth the investment.

One thing I learned, all narcotics should be banned for the elderly. I switched vigil for my dad in the hospital with my sister and niece. A nurse had mistakenly assumed my dad was complaining of pain (she didn’t understand him, or didn’t really care) and called in to get a pain med. Well, he went into cardiac arrest.

I think I will tattoo my chest with, NO NARCS-MY FAMILY WILL SUE.

Casilda, making such an unequivocal statement such as all narcotics should be banned for the elderly is really a rather thoughtless and dangerous statement. I am very sorry for what happened to your dad, and I can understand your feelings, as my MIL nearly died from cardiac and respiratory arrest after being given a NON-narcotic pain med post op. She ended up on a ventilator the ICU, and I wanted the drug taken off the market–but that was her body’s reaction to the drug. Yes, narcotic overdose does and can occur, and the elderly and children are the most susceptible, but I can tell you that, after having worked 32 years as a RN in both the ICU ad the Recovery Room, they can be and are safely administered to most patients, including the elderly.

I cannot imagine having a an elderly lady as a patient who was hit by a car and had multiple fractures and internal injuries, or a patient dying of metastasized lung cancer, or having a bowel resection and me just standing there saying “I know your pain is a 10, but really, I can’t give you anything stronger without giving you a narcotic, which is banned for people over 65, so you will have to suffer.” That would be malpractice and cruel, and also dangerous to the patient’s recovery, as the physiological effects of severe pain can cause a host of complications in the body.

Narcotics have their place, even in the elderly, but they must be monitored well and the dose often needs adjusted according to the age and weight and medical history. When necessary they should be used, and it must be remembered that ANY drug, even a Tylenol (which BTW actually can be very toxic when taken improperly ) can cause a severe reaction in ANY person.

It is really a disservice to outright declare banning narcotics for the elderly. There often isn’t anything else to control severe pain, and to deny such pain control to a person and let them suffer is unthinkable.

Praying for your mother Elena … praying that the doctor gives her the right medication and that she suffers no ill side effects from it … God Bless

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Praying for your Mom and you to make the right decision and find the most effective treatment.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Continued prayers for your Mom’s health …
