The 10 Commandments and the Blessed Virgin Mary

First, I am not an authority on the Bible.
Second, I have been thinking about the numerous positions of the different denominations and religions where Mary is concerned.
Third, I have the following question:

The Fifth Commandment is: Honor thy father and mother. Deuteronomy 5:16

And in Matthew 15:4 Christ repeats this. And also states that he who curses mother or father dies the death.

Now here is the question: I have been wondering if this commandment both brought down from the mountain by Moses, and repeated by Christ, and considering that Christ said to his disciples, specifically in John 19:27 and Matthew 12:49… is it not possible that the 5th Commandment extends to Mary where all of us are concerned?

I’m not sure if I asked the question correctly, but I hope I got the question across.

In the Catholic numbering you would be referring to the fourth commandment. But that aside, yes I do believe that it would. Jesus loves His mother and we must love who Jesus loves. If we are the Body of Christ as the Church then Mary is the Mother of the Church. Mary is the highest of God’s creation because she is the Mother of God. She is the model of the Church as His first and best disciple.

So my answer would be that while we would honor Mary as our own mother we should honor and venerate her for her salvific cooperation with God for the redemption of mankind. So, yes, the fourth commandment extends to our Blessed Mother…teachccd

Hi Rob,
I have no problem with this. I like what teachccd said, that we ought to love whom Jesus loves. Of course, we tend to honor our mothers in different ways, same with the BVM. There are different approaches to honoring her, and all of us do well to respect the various ways she is honored and loved.

Sometimes it is the trivial things in life that are so important. Likewise, Mary’s role in the New Testament is nothing short of important. Her role may seem limited, but the honour Scripture gives her is one of the highest any women has ever received; “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” - Luke 1:28 “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” - Luke 1:42 and** “Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” -** Luke 1:48.

It is right to give thanks and praise to God. It is also right to give thanks and praise to Mary, Theotokos - Mother of Jesus and also right to give the Theotokos the honour Jesus gave her. As it was in the beginning, when God commanded the Israelites to honour thy mother and father and towards the New Testament, when Jesus asked John to take care of his mother as if she was his own. Mothers are a gift from God and to not honour Our Mother, is not what Jesus Our Lord taught us.

Rob, this is an excellent thread with some thoughts to non-Catholic Christians who just see the Blessed Mother as “just a conceiver”. She is so much more than that.

I just had a partly humorous thought about that idea of Mary as “just a conceiver.”

She wasn’t just God’s petri dish.

It is also worth noting some Protestant denominations have taken a more serious approach honouring Mary as the Mother of God. This would have been impossible 50 years ago but more Protestant theologians are now beginning to accept the Catholic Church’s (partial) teaching on the role of the BVM.
