Here are the promises that the Virgen Mary makes to all those who pray her Rosary
  1. To all those who shall pray my Rosary devoutly, I promise my special protection and great graces.
  2. Those who shall persevere in the recitation of my Rosary will receive some special grace.
  3. The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin and dispel heresy.
  4. The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5.Those who trust themselves to me through the Rosary will not perish.
  1. Whoever recites my Rosary devoutly reflecting on the mysteries, shall never be overwhelmed by misfortune. He will not experience the anger of God nor will he perish by an unprovided death. The sinner will be converted; the just will persevere in grace and merit eternal life.
  2. Those truly devoted to my Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
  3. Those who are faithful to recite my Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces and will share in the merits of the blessed.
  4. I will deliver promptly from purgatory souls devoted to my Rosary.
  5. True children of my Rosary will enjoy great glory in heaven.
  6. What you shall ask through my Rosary you shall obtain.
  7. To those who propagate my Rosary I promise aid in all their necessities.
  8. I have obtained from my Son that all the members of the Rosary Confraternity shall have as their intercessors, in life and in death, the entire celestial court.
  9. Those who recite my Rosary faithfully are my beloved children, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.
  10. Devotion to my Rosary is a special sign of predestination.

What does this mean exactly?
It means you will convert into a catholic and because you will want to become pure and live a saintly life, you will not miss out on any of the sacraments of the catholic church. In other words, praying the Rosary of our Lady will impulse you to fulfill and not die without missing any of the sacraments of the Catholic Church. You will feel the urge of making sure you are living all of them and therefore, you’ll not die without them.

That will only happen if you truely are devotionally praying the Rosary with good intentions and not just praying it “TO SEE IF ITS TRUE OR LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS.” You must have trust in Jesus and have faith in the Rosary.

I am a bit skeptical, I must say. It reminds me of those prayers to St Jude one sees in the paper that are supposedly always effective, or like magical thinking. To whom and under what circumstances were these promises made?

I have always considered this that the Last Rites would be made available to you. 🙂

These promises are approved to be distributed, and were given to St. Dominic and Bl. Alan de la Roche.

Christ said, ‘Ask and ye shall receive.’ without qualifiers. There are some qualifiers and context though if you consider the whole, and so it is the same with the above, they are properly understood in the entire context of the Faith. 🙂

This is the Latin Catholic equivalent to the Protestant need for assurance in salvation.

One group is slain in the Spirit, the other has the Rosary.

You shouldn’t so lightly compare such different things and mock the promises of the rosary.

You are quite capable of reading the scriptures, ‘Because I go to the Father: and whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do: that the Father may be glorified in the Son.’ and ‘Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find.’ promises made without qualification.

You should be quite capable of realizing that the promises are made in the same spirit as the promises of Christ in scripture, and so not open to criticism for being so flatly said anymore than the words of Christ there.

No mocking at all.

I am making a comparison between the mindset of these two groups of people, and I am quite serious.

Are you and I discussing the promises of the rosary? You are quoting Jesus Christ.

We know that no Catholic can be compelled to believe in any apparition, not even this one. Each person will have his own reasons for not believing in this, of course.

No person has ever to recite even one rosary in her lifetime, not even one ‘Hail Mary’ prayer, and yet may be considered a good Catholic. In the early church there was no rosary, yet people put on Christ, saints abounded and people were saved. People today want and need assurances of their salvation, hope in Christ of the Gospel seems to not be enough for them, so they are attracted to promises from apparitions and altar calls.

This is simply an example of how close in reality modern Protestant and modern Catholic thought are alike. Two sides of the same coin, two twigs from the same branch.

these two things are not the same… Protestants say that because they have faith or have had a particular experience, their salvation is guaranteed right now and always.

What we believe is that if we’re devoted to Mary, she would give us the graces to help us persevere and to love God and repent of sin… so that we will not die without the Sacraments of the Church, etc (and all the other promises :))

these promises mean that we can have hope in our Blessed Mother that she would pray for us to Her Son, and obtain graces for us. We believe that graces come through her hands.

God bless

The Rosary was given to the Saint Dominic in the year of 1214. The circumstances that were made were to simply believe in the Rosary and pray it with devotion and faith. The Virgin Mary only requieres two simple things from every individual: Faith and devotion.

She asks for nothing more except to continue believing in her Son Jesus and work on your conversion in order to achieve eternal life.

What time period of the early church were you talking about? People do have hope in Christ and the gospel but praying the Rosary has nothing to do with thinking that we aren’t having enough. That is your personal view and opinion. Catholics want to live their faith to the max and praying the Rosary is just one way to be able to live that faith fully. If you have some knowledge of the Rosary, it is a biblical form of prayer since we are praying it and reliving the life of Jesus Christ himself by going over some biblical passages. If you have an opportunity to recieve more blessing or benefits, who wouldn’t take it?

  1. Devotion to my Rosary is a special sign of predestination.
What does that mean?
It means that you are already determining your future. In other words, you are Guaranteeing your pass to heaven. Since the Rosary is a powerful form of prayer and gives you special graces and benefits, its making it more simple and easy to get direct entrance into heaven and have higher chances of getting there. Your future is already being determined down on earth by praying the Rosary devotionally which is likely to be: Heaven.

You are being predestined to go into heaven and there will nothing that will change it. Since predestination is often known as a doctine that God already knows who will go into heaven and who will not since the begenning, all those who are pure and saint will have entrance in heaven. The Rosary assures that you maintain yourself in that state of pureness and have the capability of going directly to heaven and nothing will change that future if you actually maintain the prayer of the Rosary and pray it every single day.

I don’t think anyone here is trying to dis the Rosary. However, as an approach to prayer, “if you do this, you will get that” has some pretty serious problems. Especially something like “will not die without the Sacraments of the Church”. Unless you want to make sacrament into a meaningless spiritual term, I have serious reservations that praying the Rosary can guarantee that something will not prevent access to the Sacraments. Do such people never die unexpectedly and unprepared? If they do, do we argue that they must not have had “real” devotion.

It does begin to sound like the arguments some make about the “once saved always saved” doctrine found in some denominations.

As a Catholic, no one is forced to pray the Rosary. God doesn’t force anyone to do anything. In the promises of the Rosary, it says that those who pray the Rosary will recieve the Virgin Mary’s protection. It also states that such individual will not die from an unprovided death. They WONT die from an unexpected death or an unprepared death. The way your putting it is like for example me saying that if you eat your vegetables, you’ll be healthy. But then someone argues, “ok, what if you don’t become healthy? Does that mean that vegetables don’t make you healthy?”

You are the one making the serious problems and making life or the understanding of the Rosary complicated.

I don’t think any theological work on prayer that I have ever encountered within Christianity, including the CC, would allow for this kind of understanding of prayer.

This in the Apologists section pretty much sums up my thoughts on this.

Wait, so is this a good or bad thing? Does this mean that I have added positively to your views or thoughts of the Rosary?

I don’t think anything here, such as the promises, has contributed to my view of the Rosary at all, because I don’t actually think it really applies to it or represents the CCs view of it.

I think the Rosary is a perfectly legitimate form of prayer, one that many find useful and rewarding, and as excellent disapline. I think there are other forms of prayer that can also fulfuill the same functions.

If I did think this stuff really was what the Rosary was about, or that it represented the CCs understanding of prayer, I would say it was very negative - incompatible with a Christian understanding of prayer, and very dangerous to boot.
