The 1950 Raccolta and Acts of Reparations to the Virgin Mary

Does anyone have any experience with the Raccolta?

Some of the prayers included in the Raccolta, and which have indulgences assigned to them, are:

– Reparation for insults to the Blessed Virgin Mary
– Reparation for blasphemy against the Blessed Virgin Mary

Is there a need for reparations to be made to the Blessed Virgin?

What are considered insults to Mary?

Does anyone recite these prayers at their parish or during private prayer? I heard them recited once at a Traditional First Friday Vigil.

Is there a need for reparations to be made to the Blessed Virgin?

Well, if one accepts the idea that reparations can be made, and how one interprets reparations.

If you assume that a reparation is made to God, it does make sense to an extent, to have a reparation “to” a saint, or more accurately a reparation against “insults and blasphemies” that reject God’s wonders worked in the lives and actions of his saints. Especially in the case of the Blessed Virgin, because she was the Mother of the Incarnate Word, and thus most “insults and blasphemies” against her touch upon the mystery of the Incarnation and thus an an indirect fashion, on Christ. Thus the prayer ends by saying “May they * join with us in proclaiming thee blessed among women, the Immaculate Virgin and most compassionate Mother of God.” Because if you insult the title of the Mother of God, then you are essentially being a quasi-Nestorian, if you say she is not blessed among women, then you are contradicting Scripture and sort of insulting God who raised her to privilege of the Mother of the Son, etc., etc. Thus a "reparation

As to reparation, I find it helpful to think of it in the sense that “insults and blasphemies” are the results of sin in the world which either denies or obscures the mystery of Christ and his Incarnation, and consequently that of the Blessed Virgin in her role in the mystery of salvation. In this particular case, out of love for the Blessed Virgin honoured as our Mother, and a will to share in the mission of Christ i.e. overcoming sin and its effects in the world, both in prayer and action, though the intercession and help of the Blessed Virgin, so that the kingdom of God can be realized. And of course, in that kingdom, when everyone recognizes and respects the great deeds of God on our behalf, they will also recognize the great wonders he worked for the Mother of the Son.*

That’s an interesting way of looking at it. I suppose if you look at it from a human perspective, if one insults someone’s child, one also causes offense to the mother.

However, since there are also reparations made to Christ, I’m a little confused as to why this is necessary.

Yes, but reparations made to Christ usually have some other object such as blasphemy against the Blessed Sacrament. And certainly, you could have a reparation to Christ for insults against his Mother, but equally I suppose you can involve the Mother’s intercession in the act of reparation.

As per the latest norms on indulgences, all prayers carry a partial indulgence.
