What happens at the second coming for the final judgement when Jesus takes the just to heaven and the wicked are sent to eternal damnation? – more specifically if a soul is condemned to hell upon their death and then condemned again at the final judgement doesn’t that mean that their soul is temporarily released from hell and then sent back to hell again? - How do I have this understanding wrong?

Although everyone will know the results of the final judgement, the soul condemned to hell will still be suffering. It will be more to their suffering because of they face the torment of seeing the just in heaven. So, the souls in hell will still be in the suffering of hell.

Hi Dad,

Your status at the moment of death determines your fate for all eternity. The last judgment’s purpose is to reveal to the whole world the good and the bad that has happened on earth since creation and to show the love that God manifested in his plan for creation.

The damned and the saved will not be “summoned” from any place. Presently, heaven and hell are not places, since the souls of the departed are pure spirits and do not occupy space. (An exception must be made for the resurrected Jesus and Mary, who are necessarily “somewhere”, since they have their body.)

The “novelty” of lthe Last Judgment is that our bodies will participate in our eternal fate. The saved will inherit a glorified body such as Jesus enjoys since His resurrection; the damned will also resurrect with their bodies in whatever state God has determined.

Heaven and hell at that point will become a place as well as a state. Revelation speaks of a new Heaven and a new Earth. We can only speculate as to what that means.

Meantime, let’s pray every day for the gift of perseverance.

The Final Judgement will be known to all. Everyone will know who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell.

CCC 1039: “In the presence of Christ, who is Truth itself, the truth of each man’s relationship with God will be laid bare.626 The Last Judgment will reveal even to its furthest consequences the good each person has done or failed to do during his earthly life.”

Furthermore, I believe that those who are sentenced to Hell after the Final Judgment will be punished with both body and soul. Therefore, they will suffer both physically and spiritually for all eternity. I can’t find the specific reference in the Catechism, so maybe someone else can help me out there. I could be wrong, too. 😊
