Wow, I suggest you search history just a little bit deeper. Although much of what could have been see through the HS could not be explained in terms we have today, many things that were prophesized were put in descriptions of their day. The apostle John of instance did this very thing.Yes – the Fathers did not discern through the Holy Spirit things like quantum mechanics, general or special relativity, the Pauli exclusion principle, plate tectonics, biological evolution, organic chemistry, the heliopause, the helical structure of DNA, or the Hubble Red Shift. They were ignorant of these things. Their theology was written and articulated in light of the Aristotelian-Ptolemaic world view which began to break down in the sixteenth century. The core of biblical and Patristic theology (e.g., the incarnation and resurrection, the conciliar definitions, Nicene Creed, etc,) remains constant. But theology is also interpreted for each generation, to reflect our widening understanding of the universe.

As for what the Fathers discerned through the HS, it came by the will of God.
The important thing to understand here is God can create quatum mechanic from a rock. So you are not selling the Fathers short, but you are selling God short.
As for theology and psycology and the wisdoms of men, the smarter men become, the more they attempt to be like God, be gods. This is the very sin that brought him under the yoke of death.
