Gag.I remember that one![]()
And exactly what would qualify as his best??No Spirit is A Movin this morning, Praise heaven. NOT one of Carey Landry’s best!
I always liked it. What’s wrong with the refrain?Lol. That was funny you said that because we sang “Send Us Your Spirit” at the preparation of the gifts, and “The Spirit Is A-Movin’” is listed above that song. I was reading the verses and cringed. “Old ones are dreaming dreams and young people see the light.”
I liked the hymns besides “One Spirit, One Church”, which is a modern spout on “Come, Holy Ghost”. It adds a refrain that goes, “We are a pilgrim people; we are the Church of God, a family of believers, disciples of the Lord. United by the spirit, ignited by the fire, still burning through the ages, still present in our lives.” .
We had Come Holy Ghost for the opening hymn but we were given Carey’s “Gentle Woman” for the communion hymn. AND for offertory it was “peace is flowing like a river”, and for the closing, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.Hands up those of you who sang Carey Landry’s “The Spirit Is A-Moving” this morning.

It is fine to mention things like the U.S. Memorial Day and the hardships veteran’s have faced, etc, but Nationalism in any form should be avoided, IMHO. The Church is universal, even if it has national institutions to help guide it in a particular nation. For the after-communion “hymn,” we had “God Bless America.” And the recessional was, “America the Beautiful.”
IMO church is NOT the place for patriotic songs. They are not about God directly, and I was rather astounded that “God Bless America” was used as the post-communion hymn. It is not a hymn, and it was very difficult to properly pray with such a jarring music choice being used.
We get the same songs around July 4th and Veteran’s Day. Someone is trying to be patriotic, but what about the parishioners who aren’t from the USA?

This is a sad fact that often breaks my heart every time I read of it, and it’s not limited to the 19th and 20th centuries, mind.If we look back at the co-opting of the Church for Nationalist ends, we need only look back on the wars this world has seen in the 19th & 20th centuries, where priests blessed the efforts of people killing each other on both sides of conflict.
very true, sadlyThis is a sad fact that often breaks my heart every time I read of it, and it’s not limited to the 19th and 20th centuries, mind.![]()
I’m jealous. We sang (IMHO) the best Pentecost hymn, Come Down, O Love Divine.
You can listen to it here. The first part is a guitar lesson to teach how to play it for Mass (no kidding!) but he starts singing at the 3:50 point.I’m jealous.
I’ve never heard of “The Spirit’s A-moving”. Maybe I should be happy I didn’t?
