The 60s called and they want their bad music back

We did “Come Holy Ghost”, Pentecost text for “Hail Thee Festival Day”, “America the Beautiful” and :eek: “The Battle Hymn Republic”. That wasn’t the choice of the music director who disagreed with it. The liturgy director chose it… another example of not immediately assuming the music is always chosen by the musicians. We did do a chant for the sequence in English, though.

I haven’t heard it either and I am not tempted to look it up. I agree those are odd choices for hymns on Pentecost. We also sang Come Holy Ghost, and O thou who camest from above.

I haven’t heard of that song. We sang Come Holy Ghost.

I listened to “The Spirit is A-Moving” on youtube after reading this and I have to say I would be rolling my eyes too if we sang it.

I do like “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” but that’s about it.
 
Cary Landry always made me want to puke. His music, his voice, everything.

But the 60’s did have a ton of good music - maybe not liturgical music, but good nonetheless!

I’ve been Catholic for ten years, but I still haven’t figured out why the presiding priest doesn’t choose the music. It’s his Mass, isn’t it? :confused:

I think hymns written before 1900 had much better theology that the pablum we sing today.
 
The final hymn at mass today was God Bless America. It was very sad… :banghead:

I just don’t like it, personally. I used to think that it was too centered around us by adding the refrain “We are a pilgrim people…” I mean, yes, the Church is what we are and we the Church, but the day is a special day for the Holy Spirit. I always preferred “Come, Holy Ghost” over that one.

I must admit that I like that setting. I think our music director uses that because we don’t carry a chant very well.

I hope you don’t think we’d get better music if they did because what I’ve experienced is that, unless they are well versed in music, they pick what they’re familiar with and if they used Carey Landry in the seminary that’s what they still want. We got into a ‘discussion’ with a priest who got upset with us for daring to suggest that Carey Landry’s ‘Gloria’ from the “Yound People’s Mass” was inappropriate since it’s not the actual words of the Gloria.

I took courses on liturgy for a few summers and some of my fellow students were priests and seminarians. They all told us is that they don’t learn much about liturgy in the seminary, they have to go out and do courses on their own. Often the Director of Music has more knowledge about Music for Mass than the priest.

Oh man! I had to attend an OF Pentecost Mass last year. We sang that one, along with Everyone Moved By the Spirit, Somebody’s Knocking at Your Door, His Banner over Me Is Love (complete with hand motions!) along with a sing-a-long/ saxophone solo homily of some song the deacon wrote. http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/952/facepalmf.gif There’s something about Canada and its love for Carey Landry and cheesy music. 🤷 Gather Us In is actually an improvement sometimes. :eek:

I have to take courses on Liturgy for my Youth Ministry certification, which is only 144 hours of coursework, and 15 months of hands-on work in the parish. I’m probably only ever going to use it for planning retreats and graduation ceremonies once or twice a year, and yet, for me, it’s a requirement.

Yeah, it did. I deeply regret not being alive during the 60s and 70s.

I can’t get enough of Ray Repp’s “Till All My People are One”. The banjo and catchy melody really makes me want whip out my tambourine and jangle along. It’s a great “sending forth” song. Joe Wise’s “Take Our Bread” moves me in such a way that during communion, I want to take out my lighter and sway back and forth in Thanksgiving.
 
Don’t get me started on bad liturgical music-like Were You Thereon Good Friday or morning Has Brokenon any other Sunday. Deo Gracias I now attend the EF Mass almost exclusively :highprayer:

Perhaps.

We sang it this morning. The melody isn’t bad, but the lyrics are crammed in, IMHO.

And it probably shold be titled, “The Spirit is A-Movin’” with no “g”.

See my earlier post - we had “God Bless America” as our post-communion song and “America the Beautiful” as the recessional.

And this on PENTECOST!!! Memorial Day isn’t until tomorrow, so save me the cheap patriotism.

I haven’t heard a Carey Landry song in Canada for nearly 20 years! It must be an eastern thing;)
