The 60s called and they want their bad music back

I’m a convert and wasn’t in the church in 1973. Please don’t tell me you sang that in church.

I do remember the song but I don’t remember singing it that way during Mass. I think maybe it was a pop version. But at Mass there would be no background music and it would have been sung more slowly. When I heard the music at the beginning of that video it didn’t sound familiar at all (and it also sounded awful).

The version that I remember singing was more like Gregorian Chant, although the words were in English (anything can be set to Gregorian Chant except perhaps disco and rap, but then we’re discussing music here so they don’t count anyway).

For the after-communion “hymn,” we had “God Bless America.” And the recessional was, “America the Beautiful.”

IMO church is NOT the place for patriotic songs. They are not about God directly, and I was rather astounded that “God Bless America” was used as the post-communion hymn. It is not a hymn, and it was very difficult to properly pray with such a jarring music choice being used.



We get the same songs around July 4th and Veteran’s Day. Someone is trying to be patriotic, but what about the parishioners who aren’t from the USA?

I agree totally. I think a post communion hymn should be reflective and contemplative.

I wasn’t in the church in the early seventies, but I actually do remember hearing it (likely on an 8-track my parents or older sisters had). I have to say thanks since it’s now stuck in my head

I think I’ll go annoy my wife with it. She always says we need to spend more time praying together
