IIRC, the Abominaton of Desolation is more correctly translated as " the abomination that makes desolate."
Basically , a statue of , I believe Zeus, had been set up in the Temple in Jerusalem, equating Zeus with the God of Israel, therefore making the temple desolate.
In Fund’ist prot theology, the Abomination of Desolation is
a) and image of the capital A antichrist set up in the rebuilt temple and/or
b) sacrifice of an unclean animal, most likely a pig, to same.
Either way is bad news.
If a statue of Hillary Clinton or Mitt Romney turns up in Jerusalem presented as an object of worship, I’ll start worrying a lot.*
If someone sacrifices a pig to it, I’ll start with some serious examination of conscience because I know that Christ will be returning very , very soon.

The Abomination of Desolation is the Time of Coming of the Antichrist!... and his very first work!.
This is how Jesus puts it:
When therefore ye shall see the abomination of desolation, which is spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, he that reads let him understand... (Mat.24:15)... Jesus even challenges us, he that reads let him understand!...
When you go to "Daniel", he mentions it in 9:27, 11:31, 12:11, and 8:10-14., and describes the horrors of this "Abomination" in 4 places: Daniel 8:11-17, 9:26-27, 11:31-32, 12:11.
This Abomination refers to the abolition of the Eternal Sacrifice and the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem... but Daniel states that "the vision refers to the time of the End" (8:17), and Jesus himself refers us to it in Matt.24:15, and it will be the very first thing the Antichrist will do, as reported here by Jesus.

The concept of the abomination of desolation is often spiritualized with explaining it as idolatrous worship established in the hearts of God’s people (His "temple"). But the simplest and more real explanation of all these passages is to see the abomination as the suppression of the eternal sacrifice, now a days only present in Christianity in the Holy Mass.
This "Abomination" in Daniel consists of 5 facts:
1- "Abolished the perpetual sacrifice" (Dan.8:11): And as a logical consequence, if there is no "sacrifice", there will be no "altar", and no "priests" to offer it... this is the main and most important feature, described by Daniel in his four descriptions of the Abomination in the Holy Place.

If it is "eternal", "perpetual", is got to be present now, and even in Heaven, because it is "eternal":
a- "In Heaven" it is present, as described by John in Rev.5:6: "a Lamb standing as it had been slaughtered"… he is Jesus in the center of the Throne of Heaven, the reason for all the joys and songs of Heaven!.
b- "On Earth", is got to be present also "now", because it is "eternal"… and it is!, as the Lamb of God offered daily in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. (in union with the standing Lamb, its not a different sacrifice)
2- "Threw down his sanctuary" (Dan.8:11).
3- "Shall destroy the city" (Dan.9:26).
4- "He magnified himself even to the prince of the host" (Dan.8:11).
5- By his deceit he shall make some who were disloyal to the covenant apostatize (Dan.11:26).
The reign of the Antichrist will last for 7 years, as described in Daniel 8:14 and Revelation 13:5: The "Abomination" will last for 3½ years, and the "Great Tribulation" for another 3½ years, or 42 months, or 1,260 days (Rev.13:5, 11:2-3, 12:5, Dan.12:11-12). John tells us that the Antichrist is already with us (1Jn.4:3), and Paul says that the Antichrist is already at work (1Thes.2:6-8).
The Jews already have this Abomination: **They have no sacrifice, no altar, no priests, no temple**... as it was prophesied it will happen after the coming of the Messiah! (Daniel 8:11-17, 9:26-27, 11:31-32, 12:11). See Judaism after Christ

the beast has been fulfillled in the big seven times in salvation history inclusive. The dragon is the father of lies. The beast is the incarnation of his lies in human history. The False Prophet is the theological essence of the lie he speaks, from the beginning in the garden, the “False” Logos.
In Noah’s time, the beast arises in its first head, asserting itself in wickedness, man’s blasphemous defiance of the very natural law.
In the Tower of Babel, man’s selfish ambition blasphemes God by its exaltation of the Creation above the Creator, as if a materialistic dominion alone can fulfill man in place of God.
In Egypt, the kingdom blasphemously asserts itself against God, and persecutes God’s People through enslavement.
In the intermediate Jewish unfaithfulness, the Jews blaspheme God through their idolatry and immorality, and they persecute the prophets, the just of the OT.
In the Maccabean struggle, Antiochus, the OT Antichrist, prefigurement of the AC who comes in the end, was a blasphemous pagan ruler who considered himself Divine and exercised the worst persecution the Jews had ever experienced, attempting to force them into apostasy.
In the Roman Empire, the sixth king of the beast, the pagan Emperors, blasphemed God by, like Antiochus, asserting their divinity, and they horrifically persecuted the Church.
In the modern times, the beast asserts itself the seventh time in both wickedness as in Noah’s (the collapse and total affront to the core morals of life and human sexuality), and in the secular messianic blasphemy that places its faith in the material world alone and its progress, as though this alone can sustain a utopia, independent of any God or gods.
And the same lies presumably shall reach their total enmity with God in the eighth manifestation of the beast that occurs in the Great Apostasy, where the NT AC shall blaspheme God and persecute the People of God, the Church, to the greatest horror that shall ever be.
So really, the beast has opened its mouth at least seven great times from Adam and Eve to today.

I always thought of it this way. From Zachariah, Jacob or Joshua, I forget which, standing in rags (filthy garments) at the right hand of Satan. The rags make him abominable and it is flith that allows Satan to curse God, as Jacob or Joshua being one of His servants. This also reminds me of the quote, “Ye worship what ye know not, for there will come a time when no one will worships the father.”

I believe that the abomination of desolation is a false eucharist, a perverse imitation of the Most Blessed Sacrament, used by the Antichrist (in the distant future). The Antichrist is not in the world today.
