Has anyone heard anything about how the pill can cause an abortion without the mother knowing it? I’m not sure how it works, but I’ve heard about it from a couple different sources now, and I’d like to see any sort of websites or documentation, articles, anything that anyone can provide to help me learn about this. Thank you very much.

This website says: To sum up, it can be reasonably stated that OCs can not only prevent ovulation and therefore conception, but also can, at least some of the time, cause an embryo, which was conceived despite the fact that the mother had been taking OCs, to be aborted, due to a failure of implantation.

Madia beat me to it, but here’s the response I wrote anyway 🙂

Well, the birth control pill (as well as all the other hormonal contraceptives, including the “shot” or “patch”) works in three ways. It changes the cervical mucus to be hostile to sperm (either killing them or blocking their entrance to the uterus), it prevents ovulation (so that no eggs are out and about ready to be fertilized), and it prevents fertilized eggs (AKA babies) from being able to live inside the uterus and finding a place to implant (so they die and fall out of the uterus, and since they’re so small when this happens, the mom wouldn’t even know). Unfortunately, none of these three ways work all the time. The ovulation suppression is especially unreliable, and so the pill has to rely on making the uterus hostile to the fertilized embryo. Now some people are actually changing the definition of pregnancy to having an implanted egg, so that “merely” a fertilized egg is not considered to be a human being. If a scientist defines a pregnancy as having a fertilized egg implant in the uterus, they will not have to say that the Pill, which prevents implantation, causes early abortions, because by their definition, a pregnancy never existed. This reasoning is the exact same line of thought that made slavery legal in this country–changing the definition of a person to exclude the ones that society wants to kill.
 
The IUD, patch, pill, shot: all have an abortifacient effect.
 
OC’s contain both estrogen and progesterone. What about perimenopausal or menopausal women who are on replacement therapy? If by some slight chance they ovulate and get pregnant,can they abort from the hormone replacement therapy? I myself take Promtreuim (which is supposed to be a natural progesterone) for irregular bleeding, can that cause an abortion?

I would be very interested if anyone knows this for a fact, but I would imagine that you’re taking these hormones to *replace * the ones your body is no longer making for itself. People taking OC’s already have a normal level of these hormones and are not replacing hormones, but altering their hormonal balance. I have not heard of hormone replacement therapy causing abortions, but that’s not saying much 🙂

This is actually what led me to stop taking The Pill back when I was learning the Faith. It is absolutely horrifying to me that I may (and probably do) have children in Heaven for whose deaths I am responsible. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy.

Yes, spontaneous abortion is listed as a side effect of using this drug.

OCs contain estrogen and PROGESTIN, which is a synthetic progesterone. Progestins should not be taken during pregnancy; however, progesterone can be prescribed during pregnancy. Progesterone is known as the hormone of pregnancy because of its role is sustaining pregnancy. If a woman has low progesterone levels, she may be presribed progesterone. You are correct, Prometrium is progesterone not a progestin.

Because it is unethical to include pregnant women in drug trials, the safety of a medication during pregnancy is always an area of caution. Prometrium is used off label post-ovulation and during pregnancy to sustain pregnancy. If you have concerns about natural progesterones, research progesterone and pregnancy. Then, ask your pharmacist about your hormones.
