The All-Powerful "BAN" button: Catholics, let's remember the example we set on Social Media

There are a couple of people whom I’ve come across on Facebook who make it very clear that when they call their groups/pages “Catholic” they only mean Latin Rite. Easternerns are not welcome. Oh, well.
That’s a shame

I always figure when I’m excluded from some “group” , it’s their loss. To post on the Internet is to eventually be banned from someplace. It’s happened to us all, somewhere, sometime.

I think are in danger of placing too much importance on social media. What really matters is the face to face contact we have with people. While people can get banned from various social media groups, getting banned from a local Catholic church is a much more remote prospect.

Groucho: “I would never want to belong to a club that would have me as a member”.

I was banned from a conservative religious site its because my posts were making people question their faith. One person complained that i was the devil. Another said if I post what I did, I should state I’m an Atheist, not a Christian, in order to warn people - even though all my posts were trying to reconcile questions about my faith.

All it did was make me think religious people really don’t know what they are talking about, and made me question my faith even more.

I would say don’t base your faith on what people say online. The online world is like a kind of wierd, alternative universe. A universe where people’s views are polarised and people end up adopting increasingly extreme positions, and where winning arguments and scoring points seem to be among the most important things. I would think that if we sat down in person with most of the people we end up arguing with online, we would each be much less extreme and have a lot more in common than would appear from our online interactions. Genuine, sincere human connection is lost online.

So you’re questioning my experience? K thanks.

Technology may exacerbate it, but they are still real flesh and blood people in the groups, in the forums, on social media doing the banning.

No, it was the Catholic folk in charge of the group that did the banning.

It just goes a long with how you experience things. I could see how a Muslim who’s only experience with Catholics was negative would go on to affect how they perceive the entire religion, etc.

I was banned from my favorite final fantasy group due to the abuse of one of the admins so I started my own and subsequently they tos d me. Now they reverted it and everyone went back. They still won’t let me come back. It was a lot of fun and there is nothing I can do. I was also blocked from a portion of my favorite political debate group for reasons I don’t know explicitly. The part year they were a lot of fun. It’s a bummer. But idk I’ve heard rejection is God’s protection but I sure get a lot of it and I dunno. I feel like a semi attractive guy… I must be more of a jerk than I usually realize. Sometimes there is nothing we can do but move forward.
