Not sure if anyone else here is a fan of alternate style music…but as some of my taste seem out of kilter in the other “listening to threads” I thought I would start one…

First up…

One of my absolute favs from Norway…

Rancho Relaxo

Sorry to sound like an old fogey, but what is “alternate” style?
Do you mean alternative music? Indie music? Hipster college radio music? Or is this some specific genre?

Ha!

Today I just bought one of Anton’s bands he helped along Blue Angel Lounge…sadly they are no longer together…

I actually picked up Medisatation’s new one, Blue Angel Lounge and The Hanging Stars also…

Well I am no hipster, they are just posers emulating advertising and “group-think” cool…plus I am old…Indie is a good way of classifying it…Colleges used to be the place where you would find out about a lot of these “underground” groups…

There are some groups that paved the way, Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Nico, for sure…

Hmmmm…well it seems like a simple question but it really is not…for me it is the music I have always listen to. In high school I gravitated towards those odd man out groups…Violent Femmes, Trio, Devo, Wall of VooDoo, ect.
It is not major label, not radio play, not really known about from the majority of folks…it can be lo-fi, almost country…almost punk…I wish I could explain it better…maybe tad can chime in?

I like Shoegaze, which is very layered music…usually with a lot of distortion and the vocals are sometimes so layered they are hard to make out.
I own a lot of music, and 95% is form groups on minor or private labels…modern day music gives me worms…

Here is a nice classic example of some early Shoegaze dream pop

Yeah I had a friend who was a big Slowdive fan. He’s younger than me. Not really my cuppa. I was into all the Factory bands in the early 80s, Magazine, early Cure up through maybe 1987, Love and Rockets before they got popular. In the 90s I didn’t like as much indie stuff. Bob Mould, Dino Jr., then I quit music for about 10 years and got into Robert Pollard and metal when I came back.

Not sure if this counts. Alternate to me is most anything you don’t usually hear on the radio.

One thing I like about these ‘listening to’ threads is that it reminds me of the days when I would get together with friends and listen to albums. I don’t know if kids still do that or how they share music these days.

At any rate, I really enjoy listening to new music and so far, everything posted in this thread is new to me. I like to let the YouTube videos roll after playing the initial video. I ran into these guys after listening to one of @Tis_Bearself’s offerings. I don’t know what you call it, but I just love this kind of music.

There are music nerd forums where people hip each other to good bands all day. Usually the people on them aren’t kids, but bored office workers ranging from 25 up who have jobs where they can be online a lot and dish about bands.
