Does anyone here watch Japanese animation, aka anime? My favorite titles include: .hack//sign, any Miyazaki movie, Inuyasha, Trigun, and too many others.

Who, me? The Grand Otaku of Squee?

I’ve written about it for Gilbert Magazine, have watched for many years, and am a huge fan of the entire Miyazaki catalogue.

Waiting now for his latest to come out on DVD, so I can hear the original Japanese version. 👍

Also a fan of Yuu Yuu Hakusho, GaoGaiGar, and pretty much any shounen adventure that catches my fancy.

Do I know you? I’ve seen your username on Christian Anime Alliance and Anime Angels. Are you the same person I’ve seen on those forums?

I sort of do. I don’t like most anime except for Sailor Moon and Hamtoro(the hamsters). I do like movies like Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, and Castle In The Sky. And there is a new one that came out. I like those. And when I was younger, I used to watch shows like Heidi, Josephine(about a boy and a magic whale), and other cartoons. For some reason, Mexico loved to show these cartoons.

I am so going to Google-fu or Bing these names: I need a Christian-centric anime group to hang out with (I get a little sick at best, offended at worst at all the insane 'shipping that goes on. Don’t get me started on some of the yaoi and yuri pairings. Especially if it involves characters that I like).

Okay, back on topic: Big fan of anything by Hayao Miyazaki, I also love:

Blood+ (Interesting take on vampires and dhampires)

Trinity Blood (Wonky but well-intentioned use of Catholic stuff, plus Father Abel Nightroad is what you might get if you crossed St. Michael the Archangel with GK Chesterton’s Father Brown)

Ghost in the Shell (lots of moral and philosophical food for thought about the nature of man and machine and combinations of the two, along with a lot of cool action and twisty plots)

Death Note (One of the most philosophical series ever)

And last though not least: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Again, wonky use of Christian imagery and ideas, but it’s one of the most intriguing things I’ve ever seen, and it has one of the best grasps of humanity’s sense of loneliness and longing for love. I might want to throw flat irons at some of the characters for being utter jerks at best – I’m looking at YOU, Gendo Ikari; there’s someone who deserved your wife more than you did and he’s standing right behind you. I’m looking at you too, Asuka; don’t make me turn you over my knee, young lady… – but I keep coming back to it…)

O noes! Mai reputashuns, I has its! 😃

CAA and AA are pretty good forums; there is very little, if any, of that other icky stuff in there and you can’t go wrong.

Hamutaro? It gets on my nerves a little in English. Love it in Japanese. Love the songs!

I watched Speed Racer, Gigantor, and Astro Boy way back when, but anime did not really get my attention (nor did I know what it was!) until I saw Miyazaki’s Mononoke-Hime. It was DAISUKI at first sight. 👍

I did, but due to a very busy schedule I recently don’t. Most of the non-Jump anime airs at late night, for instance; I have also lost most interest in watching the rest of Japanese TV - except if it be a ball game, the news, or foreign movies dubbed/subtitled into Japanese - because they are well, too predictable (sure makes the giving up of TV more easy for Lent; perhaps I should consider watching them as a form of penance? :D).

Favorites? I have quite a lot; NGE and Death Note happens to be two of these.

I used to watch anime, but not much anymore. Too much fanservice and bad teachings.

My sister is a HUGE anime fan, and is slowly but surely drawing me in.

Right now we are watching Shugo Chara! together, and I am just beginning xxxHolic (I loooove Mokona :D). She is also going to make me watch Ouran Highschool Host Club soon :).

Anime sort of sputtered out after the early 1990s. Neon Genesis Evangelion just did not seem plausible so I stopped watching it. And Mobile Suit Gundam stopped being interesting after Mobile Suit RX- 23990877654 came out, which, of course, did not include all of the variants :)😃

Peace,
Ed

I used to watch Inuyasha all the time. 🙂 Very cool and the artwork was the pretty.

In some, yes. In others, there is more ‘Christian’ content than in all of regular American Tv combined.

Where on mainstream American televison will you see a character say that his handicap was given to him by God in order to protect people?

People bash ‘anime,’ not realizing it’s just a medium with many different subjects and treatments. It’s as if you’re condemning all movies or books just because there are admittedly a LOT of bad ones.

Mm, one thing to keep in mind about anime is that it is the product of the culture of a country where Christians are a minority and are relative newcomers in their society. For that reason, it’s going to reflect the values of a society where Buddhism and Shinto (which you can think of as animism with a college education) are the predominant faiths. I think Shinto was the state religion for a while, but I’d have to double check that.

That is so true. I spent my childhood in Mexico, so I grew up with anime. lol

I love anime, my favorites lately have been romantic comedies. (School Rumble, Ranma 1/2)

I think it’s funny how they try to portray Catholicism sometimes. I remember seeing a teenage nun hearing confession in this one episode, where it turned out she liked the guy who confessed. lol

hi!!

Inu-rei reporting for duty! Hell Girl, Noir, and NGE are my tops…for now anyways ^_-

I used to watch all sorts in college, primarily the ones based in feudal Japanese times. The fanservice can be an issue, but as far as the values go I treat it like any other pagan world view. Japan could’ve been a great bastion of Catholicity if it were not for Shogunate shutting out the West in its entirety, so it is largely un-evangelized. It’s kinda fun to watch them and try to find the glimmers of truth that are intrinsic to the human condition, same as with Greek or Norse mythologies. I liked Kenshin, Shura no Toki, Bleach and I watched so many others its hard to keep track. Miyazaki is, of course, the King of Anime imo.
