Much has been written of the last days and of the Anti Christ as described by St Paul in II Thessalonians. So my question is

When the Anti Christ comes will we immediately recognise him as the Anti Christ.

IMO most will not.

Agreed, and for all we know he could be running about right now.

You do not ask a question here at all, but make a statement.
My question for you is, do you realize there is a difference between an anti-Christ and the Anti-Christ?
Have you seen the Anti-Christ yet? He sure is taking his time.

Actually I have done both. I made a statement and asked a question. And yes I do know the difference between an anti Christ and the Anti Christ which is why I cited II Thessalonians so that everyone would know I was speaking about THE Anti Christ and since my question didnt identify THE ANTI CHRIST as existing in this day and age - it can be considered hypothetical and was posed for discussions sake.

I hope this clarifies for you.

The entire idea of an Anti Christ is redundant if there is a Satan. Why the need to toss another boogeyman into the picture? I don’t understand. Was Paul just using that as a literary device to keep people on their toes?

Through my inconsistent ability to be holy, I’m a form of an anti-Christ. Where conversion toward Christ ceases; when I revert and exchange evil for good, I advance toward my anti-Christ.

Tolkien, in The Lord of the Rings, personified that action so well with Bilbo and also by displaying Sméagol’s eternity as Gollum.

Why do you think these are separate entities? I would envision the Anti Christ as the ultimate deception by Satan, one unrecognized until it was too late or nearly so.

The entire idea of an Antichrist is based on Scripture. Scriptures is, to say the least, pretty authoritative. And I don’t think he is a mere literary device. Neither St. Paul nor the Holy Spirit Who inspires Scripture plays ames with people or messes with their heads. It is an error of our times to explain away things like the Antichrist and the devil as mere literary devices or metaphors.

The “coming” of the “Antichrist” is not an article of faith, and would that modern-day Christians would not insist upon treating it as such.

The "Antichrist is nothing but a humbug, or, as another poster put it, a bogeyman. The “Antichrist” is but a strange fiction born of the Evangelical religion coupled with a conspiratorial end-times mentality. This odd notion of a powerful political ruler sprung from the loins of Satan to enslave the earth does not spring from the Catholic religion, at all.

I place the “Antichrist” on a par with the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Leprechauns. It isn’t a topic that intelligent Catholics should discuss as though it merited serious speculation, to the point where one attempts to discern when he will arrive. Might as well sit up in front of the hearth Christmas Eve and take bets on when Santa will slide down the chimney.

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

After studying the picture of Antichrist in St. Paul’s Epistle to the Thessalonians, one easily recognizes the “man of sin” in Daniel 7:8, 11, 20, 21, where the Prophet describes the “little horn.” A type of Antichrist is found in Daniel 8:8 sqq., 23, sqq., 11:21-45, in the person of Antiochus Epiphanes. Many commentators have found more or less clear allusions to Antichrist in the coming of false Christs and false prophets (Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:6, 22; Luke 21:8), in the “abomination of desolation”, and in the one that “shall come in his own name” (John 5:43).

I submitted this thread to discuss the coming of THE ANTICHRIST not to invite non catholic commentary on the event which has been commented on since prior to the coming of Jesus in the Flesh. It is apparent that you erroneously dismiss the word of GOD in Scripture - but that is not the purpose of this thread. If you want to argue whether or not Scripture is in error might I suggest you start your own thread and argue the merits of your opinion there?

Thanks

Robert…

Well, we know that when Christ comes again, there will be no doubting the fact. As for Antichrist, there have been so many precursors throughout history that his coming may be less obvious, at least at first. I am sure many will be taken in by him when he does come. There are clues as to his identity in the Apocalypse, but perhaps they will only become clear when the time comes.

Where, in the Apocalypse, is the Anti-Christ mentioned?

I agree. I never understood how one could be a good, faithful practicing Catholic all of their lives, yet be “tricked” by the anti-Christ and end up separated from God for all eternity. If one is in a state of grace at the moment of death, then there is nothing to be afraid of. The modern notion of the “anti-Christ” comes more from books and movies than from serious theological discussion.

I will convey what I have learned through the reading of many saints, and the prophetic word which still echos, He is to be a Jew who will mask himself as never born of the seed of man, he will have gained all worldy power, so as to enter into the church and proclaim himself as God, (desolation abomination) the Jew will accept him, God will send two witnesses (some say) Enoch & Elijah, (who have never experienced a natural death) Enoch goes to the gentiles, Elijah to the Jews, his true wonders proclaim Christ, the only Son of the Living God! , the Jews are finally moved to the ultimate leap of faith, so as to accept Christ+++ it’s based on what some have prohesied will take place through the witiness, that he will lead them to a mountain and tell them to dig and there is revealed a cave, by which he points out to them the ark of the covenant, fully intact (commandments, manna, etc.) The Jews repent and accept Christ the Anti-Christ kills the witnesses and attempts in vain to convince the Jews otherwise, he will then attempt on the Mt of Olives the Ascension, as he calls forth his army to destroy all enemies, in essence it will be his demise. We indeed are living in times of change, I firmly believe the chaistisment, the world is soon to enter, will in fact usher in a new springitme. I could say more… but may this suffice…“Praise be Jesus” , EWTN did a great prophetic special on a book written by Desmond Birch, (the book title? Trial/Tribulation/Triumph). Dominus Vobiscum…May we follow the voice of Mary, who calls out to us, she will lead us to victory…Totus Tuus…:signofcross: by the way that special was years ago…the five signs the Church speak of for the end times, Gospel is to have been proclaimed to all the earth, The beast will be present, the Anti-Christ, conversion of of the jews, (#4 ???) I’m forgetting, alot…:juggle:

Revelation 13:1-9
I see no mention of the Anti-Christ there. It talks about a great beast. I don’t recall the term “Anti-Christ” being used at all in the Book of Revelation. That is why I asked the question.

Sorry, I thought you asked where the Anti-Christ is mentioned, not the term ‘Anti-Christ’. Sorry for not understanding.

Well said. I like that answer .
