The Aperges

When I attended my Anglo Catholic parish before becoming Catholic, we had the Asperges during High Mass.

I think that I have seen it done once in my parish which is very traditional parish.

Do you think they will bring back this part of the Mass ever?

I really liked it and miss it.

The Sprinkling Rite is already part of Mass. It’s one of the options that is available to the priest each Sunday and which is encouraged particularly during the Easter Season. In practice I see it used mainly at the Easter Vigil where it’s part and parcel of the Rite and on Easter morning Masses.

We have it at every High Mass which is every other week here. I attend an EF though. Maybe you could talk to your priest or find an EF in your diocese that offers the High Mass?

It is part of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, but it is only done at the principal Mass on Sunday. If there is more than one Mass on Sunday, the Asperges (or Vidi Aquam, depending on the season) is only done once.

It varies from place to place, I imagine. In my experience 2 parishes I have belonged to used frequently (perhaps always) during the Easter Season; 1 parish used it every Sunday (except perhaps during Lent?) at its primary Mass.

To the OP: As noted above, the Asperges is already an option available at the discretion of the celebrant – Ask your priest why he does not use it, and would he be willing to use it more often?

Others have pointed out that there is an option for the “sprinkling rite,” but what I think you’re asking about is the actual Latin hymn, Asperges Mei. I remember that from our “High Mass” in the late 50’s and early 60’s, and I miss that – it was majestic (when well sung), and beautifully solemn. Outside of the Extraordinary Form, I’m guessing that the *Asperges *isn’t done.

We sang it every week at the one parish I had been attached to. To repeat: I expect practice varies from place to place. :twocents:
