This question comes from another thread that I feel deserves its own thread.

I have heard many people mention that the true church had to go underground when Rome legalized christianity and persecuted the real christians. The real christian church then re emerged during the reformation.

My questions are
  1. are the beliefs of these reformed christians the same as the beliefs of the christians of the first three centuries before the apostasy? Please provide evidence
  2. Which church has the true beliefs of the early christians?
    Which ones don’t?
3)when did the theory of the underground church emerge? Can you show me solid documentation of this? If not, why do you believe it to be the case?

It is such a popular theory of the “lost church” and I would like to know more about it

thanks

I doubt you will find many here that actually stick up for that theory. And even if you do, don’t expect a logical explanation of the whole thing. It’s more one of those convenient excuses that has no basis in reality, like that “corrupted scriptures” thing Muslims always say.

Well, i guess for such a popular theory it really surprises me that there isn’t any real evidence other than speculation about what a few verses in revelation mean about it.

Isn’t this called the Blood Trail? Some Baptists believe in this thing. Weird.

I’ve heard from an anti-Catholic that the Church derailed when the early Church Fathers started to speak against the Jews, making anti-semitic remarks. Iraneus comes to mind. But then again, this is the same guy who claims to be one of the 144,000 from Revelation…So…

haha :rotfl:

trouble with this theory is that it makes Jesus Christ an out and out liar when he promised to establish the Church on the Rock of Peter and that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Also any church that claims to have restored early Christianity would have to structure its worship as described in Acts, the Didache, and Early Fathers–in short, the Mass.

The Seventh Day Adventist believe that all churches have apostated because of their adoption of the Sunday as the New Sabbath.
