The Apostles' Names

So I was reading an article about the actual names of the apostles…not the English names we use here in the states…and the article gave their meaning (like peter is stone or rock etc). Most of them had to do with Yahweh or something symbolic alluding to our Lord.

So is this just coincidence? Or did Jesus rename them all? Or was every Hebrew name like this? It just seems too perfect that their names relate to them being apostles.

If this is by divine design, why isn’t this talked about more? Pretty amazing that their parents would name them something like that without knowing their future…unless all jewish names were like that back then

To be honest, I don’t get that information from your link. It just seems a list of names, with a brief description of what they did for a living, what happened to them according to tradition, etc. bible quotes in which they are mentioned, without the symbolic implications you are referring to, in most cases - St. Peter excepted, of course.

I think it was pretty common for parents to give their children meaningful names, especially to do with God.

Lots of Hebrew names referenced God. Any name that ends in -el is a reference to Elohim while anything that ends in -iah is a reference to Yahweh.

Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Daniel, etc.
Zechariah, Obadiah, Hezekiah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, etc.

There is no evidence of Jesus choosing a new name for anyone but Peter (and James and John, if you count them being called the “Sons of Thunder”).
